Duke continues its quest for its 10th ACC Tournament title in the championship game against Louisville Sunday at Gas South Arena. The Blue Devils are the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2013 and for the 12th time overall. Duke finished 16-2 in league action and is 23-8 overall and ranked 13th in the latest AP poll. Duke's 16 ACC victories are the most in a season under head coach Kara Lawson and tied for the second most in program history.
The Blue Devils are 56-48 all-time in ACC postseason action and have won the tournament crown nine times. The last team to win consecutive titles was NC State in 2020 and 2021. The Blue Devils won five straight from 2000-2004. The Wolfpack also was the last team to win both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year - 2021.
Duke will take on No. 2 seed Louisville, who edged North Carolina, 65-57, in the semifinals. It will be just the second ACC Tournament matchup between the two programs with Duke winning the inaugural ACC postseason meeting in last year's ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
The Blue Devils are led on offense by All-ACC First Team selection Toby Fournier's 17.6 points per game. Taina Mair is averaging 11.1 points, 5.5 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game. Ashlon Jackson is playing both ends of the court at an elite level, dropping 11.5 points per game, a team-best 66 three-pointers and 4.4 assists per game, while drawing the toughest perimeter defensive matchup for Duke's elite defense. Fournier, Delaney Thomas, Mair and Arianna Roberson lead the charge on the glass, averaging 8.2, 6.1, 5.7 and 5.6 rebounds per game, respectively. Thomas also contributes 10.4 points per game on a team-high 60 percent shooting, while Roberson adds 8.4 points and 1.1 blocks per game. Fournier is the top rim protector, averaging 2.4 blocks per game.
ACC Tournament Notes
Duke looks to capture its 10th ACC Tournament title and second straight. The Blue Devils are the No. 1 seed for the 12th time and are 26-4 all-time and 7-0 in title games as the top seed. The first seed is 25-8 all-time when reaching the title game.
Head coach Kara Lawson is 8-3 in ACC Tournament action, advancing to the semifinals in 2023, 2025 and 2026 and winning the title in 2025.
There are seven current ACC WBB teams who have won at least a share of the regular season title and won the ACC Tournament Championship:
Fournier hit the 1,000-point benchmark in her 66th career game, making her the fourth fastest Blue Devil to reach 1,000 career points. She sits behind Chris Moreland (51), Alana Beard (56) and Katie Meier (62). Fournier posted four blocks against Notre Dame to move into ninth in Duke single-season history with 73. She is just the fifth different Blue Devil to post 70 denials in a season.
Fournier has shot 179 free throws this season, ranking ninth in Duke single-season history.
Duke senior point guard Taina Mair is climbing her way up both the Duke and ACC assists charts. With five assists against NC State, Mair took over sole possession of ninth on the ACC career assists chart. Her 646 helpers are only eight away from the No. 8 spot on the ACC career list.
In three seasons at Duke, Mair has 429 assists to rank ninth in Duke career history and three away from the No. 8 spot.
Mair has 172 assists on the season to sit second in Duke single-season history. Chelsea Gray (2010-14) holds the record at 201.
Ashlon Jackson hit five threes at North Carolina to pass Abby Waner for third in career history and has 228 overall. Jackson has 66 threes this season, leaving her four away from becoming the fourth Blue Devil to record at least 70 trifectas in two seasons.
Jackson and Mair are two of Duke's best free throw shooters. In three seasons, Mair is 106-of-125 (.848), which would rank fourth in Duke history. In Jackson's four years, she is 179-of-218 (.821). That percentage would rank fifth in Duke history. Only six Blue Devils have finished their career shooting at least 80 percent from the line with a minimum of 100 attempts.
Sharing Is Caring
Duke has done a good job of moving the ball this season, averaging 17.2 assists per game to rank second in the ACC. The Blue Devils have 533 assists on 867 field goals for a 61-percent assist-to-field-goal ratio. Senior guards Taina Mair and Ashlon Jackson have been the most generous, dishing 172 and 135 helpers, respectively. It is first time since 2012-13 two Blue Devils have at least 135 assists in a season and only the fourth time in that span two players have at least 100.
Duke is one of four Division I programs to have two players averaging at least 4.0 assists. Ashlon Jackson and Taina Mair are the first ACC duo this century to each have multiple assists in 29 consecutive games of the same season.
