DURHAM, N.C. – No. 24 Duke dropped an 11-4 decision in game two of the weekend series versus No. 19 Stanford at Smith Family Stadium Saturday evening. The Cardinal (20-9, 9-5 ACC) snapped Duke's five-game win streak and handed the Blue Devils (23-11, 9-2 ACC) just their second loss in conference play.
Redshirt junior
Jessica Oakland finished 1-for-2 at the plate while collecting three RBI with a two-run home run and sacrifice fly. The San Diego, California, native recorded her ninth multi-RBI game of the season and has driven in seven of Duke's 10 runs on the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stanford wasted no time getting on the board, drawing a two-out walk before connecting with back-to-back RBI knocks to right field to plate the first two runs of the game in the opening frame.
- The Cardinal extended the gap in the top of the third as Taryn Kern sent out her first home run of the night, a solo shot to left field, and River Mahler lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 4-0 game.
- The Blue Devils attempted to spark their offense in the bottom of the fourth, recording their first two hits of the contest and drawing a two-out walk to load the bases but were unable to push a run across.
- Stanford broke the game open in the top of the fifth, with six runs off seven hits to take a double-digit lead over the Blue Devils. Kern sent out her second home run of the contest while Joie Economides highlighted the frame with her three-run blast to left center to put the Cardinal ahead, 10-0.
- Duke fought off the five-inning run rule with three runs in home half of the fifth. Oakland blasted a two-run homer to center field, bringing in senior Aminah Vega after her leadoff double to right. After placing runners on the corners, freshman Jayla Stafford slipped a base hit through the left side to drive in Duke's third run.
- In the bottom of the sixth, senior D'Auna Jennings moved herself into scoring position on an infield single, groundout and passed ball. Oakland sent a sacrifice fly to left to score Jennings and cut the deficit to 10-4.
- Ava Gall's RBI-single to deep center field tacked on the final run for the visitors in the top of the seventh to create an 11-4 advantage.
NOTES
- Oakland tallied her sixth home run of the season and fourth in the last five games.
- Sophomore Mallory Wheeler earned her seventh start of the season in the circle. The Jensen Beach, Florida, native was ultimately tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs off seven hits, moving her season ledger to 5-4.
- Wheeler collected two strikeouts during the contest to raise her season total to 29.
