RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 18 Duke men's tennis team stormed through singles to come back and defeat No. 9 NC State 4-2 on Friday afternoon inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Blue Devils improve to 4-0 and advance to the ITA Kickoff Weekend Championship match on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
The Wolfpack captured the doubles point Friday with a marathon win on court three before Duke, led by
Cooper Williams' highest ranked win of his Duke career, downing No. 9 Martin Borisiouk on court one, ripped off four singles triumphs to secure the victory.
It is the Blue Devils' second consecutive ranked win versus NC State as last spring at the ACC Championship quarterfinals in Cary, North Carolina, No. 19 Duke upended No. 5 NC State, 4-3.
How It Happened
- Duke earned a quick first doubles win as Pedro Rodenas and Cooper Williams topped Cody Benton and Ainius Sabaliauskas, 6-2, on court one. Duke's pair hopped ahead 3-1 and never looked back. Rodenas and Williams are now 3-0 in doubles this spring.
- On court two, NC State's duo of Jules Leroux and Darius Pop topped Dylan Long and Gerard Planelles Ripoll, 6-4, to even the doubles action. With the set even at 2-2, the Wolfpack took the next three to lead 5-2. The Blue Devils got two games back, but could not force a tie.
- In a marathon match on court three, Teddy Truwit and Alexander Visser dropped a 7-6 (11-9) decision to William Manning and Charlie Camus for NCSU to take the doubles point. Neither side was able to gain a lead of more than one game before pushing into the tiebreaker. From there, Duke took a 3-2 advantage before the Wolfpack bounced back with a 6-4 lead. It was the Blue Devils' turn to respond and kept pushing before Camus and Manning took the final two points.
- Williams got Duke's first point with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over No. 9 Martin Borisiouk on court one. The victory marked the highest ranked win of Williams' Duke career. Williams led 3-2 in the first set before breezing through the final three games. In the second set, Williams held 2-1 and 3-2 edges before opening a 4-2 advantage. He led 5-3 before closing out the match. Williams is now 3-0 on court one this spring.
- Rodenas pushed the Blue Devils ahead 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court two versus Leroux. In the opening set, Rodenas trailed 2-1 before forcing a 3-3 tie and then running off the final three. Rodenas and Leroux were even at 1-1 and 2-2 in the second set before Rodenas claimed the final four for the match. Rodenas upped his dual match record to 3-0, all on court two.
- Planelles Ripoll made it a 3-1 Blue Devil lead with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory against Camus on court four. Camus led 2-1 and 4-3 in the opening set before slipping away with the last two games. In the second, the two were even at 2-2 before Planelles Ripoll took a 3-2 edge. Camus responded with the next two for a 4-3 advantage, but Planelles Ripoll answered with the next two games to lead 5-4. Camus knotted the set at 5-5 but Planelles Ripoll snagged the last two to force a deciding third set. Planelles Ripoll kept the momentum rolling into the third set by capturing the first two games for a 2-0 lead. He led 3-1 and 4-2 before Camus knotted the third set at 4-4. Planelles Ripoll replied with the final two games for the match. The triumph was Planelles Ripoll's first in dual action this spring.
- No. 85 Manning stopped the Duke run with a comeback 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-3 triumph against Visser on court three. Manning led 4-1 in the opening set before Visser clawed back and won six of the final seven games to take the set. The second set was even throughout and headed to the tiebreaker. Once there, Manning jumped out to a 3-1 advantage and led 6-3 before finishing off the tiebreaker. In the third set, the two were even at 2-2 before Manning took a 4-2 advantage and closed out the action.
- Long secured the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph versus Pop on court five. Pop led 3-1 in the opening set before Long stormed back for the victory. Long secured five of the last six games in the opening set. Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the second set, Long claimed the last three for the victory. Long improved to 2-0 in dual matches this spring.
