DURHAM, N.C. – Duke will travel to NC State as one of 56 teams competing in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Blue Devils, ranked No. 18 in this week's poll, will look to return to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship for the second consecutive season with a pair of wins this weekend.Â
The Blue Devils open the weekend versus No. 9 NC State at 11:30 a.m. Friday while No. 11 Texas A&M and Tennessee face each other at 3:30 p.m. Both match times for Friday were moved up from the originally scheduled starts due to the threat of inclement weather.Â
The winners of the Friday contests play Saturday to determine which squad will receive a bid to the indoor championships, February 13-17 in Dallas and Waco, Texas, at the Altec Tennis Complex and Jim and Nell Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, respectively.
NC State Series History
The Blue Devils own a 107-5 advantage in the all-time series, which began in 1908. Duke led the series 104-2 until the teams split the last six matches. Last spring at the ACC Championship quarterfinals in Cary, North Carolina, the Blue Devils upset No. 5 NC State, 4-3. Duke claimed the doubles point last spring before NC State took a 2-1 lead with the first two singles triumphs. The Blue Devils answered with the next two singles wins to regain the lead at 3-2. The Wolfpack's Branden Shick came back for a three-set win on court one, shifting all attention to court four, where Duke's
Remy Dugardin took his third set 6-3 to clinch the match.Â
Scouting the Wolfpack
NC State owns a 4-0 dual match record and brings two ranked singles individuals to the weekend with Martin Borisiouk checking in at No. 9 and William Manning at No. 85. Borisiouk has not played in a dual match this spring while Manning is 3-1. NCSU has taken every doubles point this season with Ainius Sabaliauskas playing on court one in all four matches.Â
Texas A&M Series History
This would be the 18th meeting between the two with Duke holding a 12-5 lead in the all-time series. The teams met annually from 1998-2008 with the Blue Devils going 8-4 during the stretch. The two have not faced each other since the Aggies claimed a 4-3 win in Durham on February 29, 2008.
Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M enters the weekend 3-0 after 7-0 wins against UTSA and UT Arlington as well as a 6-1 victory against Elon on Wednesday. Alexander Frusina leads the ranked individuals at No. 73 and dropped his dual debut on Wednesday. Khololwam Montsi checks in at No. 112 and is 2-0 so far this season. The Aggies bring two ranked doubles squads to the kickoff weekend with Montsi and Frusina at No. 29 and Togan Tokac and Tiago Pires at No. 81.Â
Tennessee Series History
The two programs have met 30 times with the Volunteers holding a 19-11 advantage. The programs met annually from 2009-22 with Tennessee going 10-5 during the stretch. Last spring, Tennessee ended Duke's season with a 4-3 comeback victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Duke captured the doubles point last spring and the first two singles matches before Tennessee stormed back to complete the comeback victory. Â
Scouting the Volunteers
Tennessee comes in with a 2-2 record, having defeated East Tennessee State 6-1 and 5-2 in a January 9 doubleheader before falling to No. 1 Wake Forest 4-1 and No. 3 TCU 4-0. The Volunteers' lone ranked individual is No. 121 Alejandro Moreno, who is 3-0 in dual action. Tennessee does not have a ranked doubles squad. Moreno and Ethan Muza have paired together in doubles and own a 2-1 mark in dual matches. Dragos Cazacu and Piotr Siekanowicz have played all four matches on the doubles' top court.Â
Duke in ITA Kickoff Weekends
Friday will mark the 15th time for Duke competing in an ITA Kickoff Weekend and the sixth in as many seasons. Last winter, Duke hosted and swept Old Dominion and Vanderbilt to earn a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The Blue Devils are looking for a third consecutive trip to the premiere indoor event after not making an appearance since 2018.Â
Last Time Out
The Duke men's tennis team opened the dual match season with a trio of victories, sweeping Elon, James Madison and North Carolina Central by 4-0 scores last weekend at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. In Sunday's doubleheader against James Madison and North Carolina Central,
Alexander Visser and
Teddy Truwit provided clinching singles wins with the Blue Devils dropping just eight doubles games in the four doubles wins. Versus the Dukes,Â
Pedro Rodenas boosted the Blue Devils' lead to 2-0 before
Cooper Williams and Visser put the match away. Against the Eagles, Duke captured the doubles point and had three singles wins nearly simultaneously to end the evening.
Saahith Jayaraman,
Dylan Long and Truwit earned the three singles wins with Long's the first of the freshman's career.
A Strong Top Three Singles Courts
Duke registered nine singles wins in the season opening weekend with six coming from the top three courts. Williams held down the top court with a 2-0 ledger with Rodenas going 2-0 on court two and
Visser posting a 2-0 mark on court three.Â
Doubles Team of the Week
The doubles pairing of Williams and Rodenas earned Co-ACC Doubles Team of the Week honors following the opening weekend. Against Elon, Williams and Rodenas picked up Duke's first win of the campaign by claiming a 6-4 victory over Veljko Krstic and Nikola Parichkov. With the set even at 2-2 and 3-3, Duke broke and held to take a 5-3 lead. Elon got a game back on its serve, but the Blue Devils held on for the set. In their doubles match against North Carolina Central, Williams and Rodenas won again on court one, topping Rodrigo Alves and Kareem Abdul Hakim, 6-2. Duke's duo led 4-1 and 5-1 before closing out the match.
