SANTIAGO, Chile – Duke women's basketball and USA Basketball FIBA Women's AmeriCup head coach
Kara Lawson and the U.S. Women's National Team captured the gold medal at the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup Sunday, July 6 courtesy of a 92-84 victory over Brazil.
With the dub, the United States reeled in its fifth FIBA Women's AmeriCup gold medal while earning a berth to the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin.
Locked in a tightly contested, back-and-forth contest for much of the game, the U.S. turned the tide completely in its favor early in the fourth quarter using a 9-0 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 76-69 advantage. The United States would extend the lead to 10 at its largest, ultimately locking down the eight-point triumph.
"What a performance by our team," Lawson said. "We knew it was going to be just a tough, physical game. It was what we expected. Brazil is a wonderful team and their power they have in their front court gave us some challenges, and our team just continued to fight."
Lawson guided USA Basketball to an unblemished 7-0 record that featured victories over Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Under her leadership, the U.S. smashed the seven-year-old tournament assist record with 161 dimes and racked up 17.6 steals per contest (123 total), falling just short of the 18.4 steals per game mark notched in 1993. Additionally, the Americans led the Women's AmeriCup field in blocks, efficiency, points, scoring average and steals.
