DURHAM, N.C. – Head coachÂ
Chris Pollard has accepted the University of Virginia head coaching position, as announced by the university this afternoon. A nationwide search is already underway for the next head coach of Duke Baseball.
Â
"I am so grateful for my time at Duke," said Pollard. "
Brad Berndt and
Kevin White took a chance on a young coach with no major college experience. I am forever appreciative of the opportunity to work at this world class university.
Nina King continues to elevate Duke Athletics in so many meaningful ways. I have zero doubt that she will hire a great coach to continue the trajectory of Duke Baseball. I feel truly blessed to coach so many wonderful players and develop relationships with so many truly exceptional people. It has been a blessing for Steph and I to raise our boys in this welcoming community. I am excited for this new adventure at the University of Virginia, but I am leaving a big piece of my heart in Durham."
Â
The 13-year skipper rejuvenated the Duke baseball program over the past decade, leading the Blue Devils to a record seven NCAA Tournament appearances and four Super Regionals, hosting the program's first postseason action in 2025, and breaking the all-time wins tally with 420.
Â
"Coach Pollard's impact over the past 13 years has been nothing short of transformational," said Duke Vice President and King-Compton Families Director of Athletics
Nina King. "He built a championship-caliber program grounded in integrity, resilience and the development of outstanding student-athletes. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and the legacy he leaves behind."
Â
Throughout the past 13 seasons, Pollard has turned Duke into a perennial powerhouse in the Atlantic Coast Conference, winning the program's first two ACC titles in 2021 and 2024, while adding a school record 45 victories during the 2018 campaign. Under Pollard's guidance, Duke secured three 40-plus win seasons, including the first back-to-back 40-win campaigns in 2024 and 2025.
