JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Graduate student Simen Guttormsen parlayed a strong showing in the men's pole vault into spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships while five Blue Devil women advanced to the semifinal races in their respective events courtesy of solid performances in the opening round on the second day of NCAA East Regional competition for Duke track and field.

Simen Guttormsen became the third Blue Devil to punch their ticket to Eugene, earning his spot in the national meet after finishing among the top 12 in the men's pole vault semifinal, which was moved to Thursday morning due to inclement weather conditions in Jacksonville Wednesday.
Guttormsen passed on the opening height before clearing the next two on his first jump. He finished the competition with a final mark of 5.33m (17-5.75 feet) – good for sixth among the field.
Seniors Abby Geiser and Megan McGinnis and junior Lauren Tolbert secured their spots in the Saturday quarterfinals of their respective events, with Geiser's coming by way of a personal-best performance.
Geiser clocked 11.32 seconds in her opening round 100m race to advance, improving her own school record in the process, while McGinnis locked down the automatic berth via a finish of 52.71 seconds. Tolbert turned in a time of 2:04.23 and finished among the top-two in her heat en route to earning the auto bid.
Following another weather day due to thunderstorms in the area, the women's 400m hurdles saw two Blue Devils in rookie Braelyn Baker and graduate student Aliya Garozzo secure spots in Saturday's quarterfinal race via automatic bids. Garozzo dashed 56.16 seconds – the best time in her heat and the fourth fastest of the entire field, while Baker clocked 57.34 seconds.
