DURHAM, N.C.— Coming off a five-goal performance in Duke's 11-7 victory against seventh-ranked Syracuse Saturday, Duke attackman
Eric Malever has been named the USA Lacrosse Division I Player of the Week and the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
The two awards are the first weekly honors for Malever this season. The Atlanta, Georgia native was dominant for the Blue Devils in a crucial conference win against the No. 7 Orange last Saturday.
Malever sparked Duke's fast start with two of the team's three goals in the first quarter. Both markers were unassisted as the graduate student attackman got to five-on-five and beat the Syracuse goaltender.
After Syracuse had pulled within one, 5-4, late in the second quarter, Malever jumped into action again with consecutive goals to give Duke the 7-4 advantage at halftime. He capped Duke's scoring in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach at 11-4.
The five goals tied his career high and marked his third hat trick this season and fifth game this season with at least five points. Malever leads all scorers this season with a career-best 56 points from 29 goals and 27 assists.
Ranked ninth this week, the Blue Devils close regular season action at Virginia Saturday. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m., at Klöckner Stadium with the winner securing the final spot in the ACC Tournament.
