OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – Duke senior captain
Wallace Clark was named to the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch List on Friday afternoon, as announced by the organization.
The Brooks Wallace award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
"It's a great time of year when we get to start diving into looking at all the shortstops from around the country and who might best represent the Brooks Wallace Award this year," said Larry Wallace, co-chair of the Brooks Wallace Award. "This list doesn't disappoint with some stellar offensive numbers along with some outstanding gloves to represent the shortstop position."
Clark, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was one of 100 shortstops selected to the watch list to begin the process. The Blue Devils switch-hitting shortstop has been one of Duke's most consistent players both at the plate and in the field this season. In his 38 starts, Clark has posted a .294 average, scoring 40 runs, collecting 40 hits, eight doubles, four home runs, 20 RBI, 39 walks, and 13 hit-by-pitches. He posts a .441 slugging percentage and a .489 on-base percentage this season. Earlier this year, Clark moved into fourth all-time at Duke with 37 career hit-by-pitches after adding 24 last season, second most in a single year.
