GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke women's golf rookie
Carla De Troia tied a Duke freshman record Wednesday as the Blue Devils opened action at the ACC Championship, which is being contested at the 6,092-yard, par-72 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
De Troia, a product of Paris, France, carded a career-low 5-under, 67, in the second round to lead the Blue Devils on day one. The round of 67 was also tied for the third-lowest 18-hole score in Duke history on a par-72 course at the ACC Championship. She also posted the tied for second-lowest round Wednesday.
Through 36 holes, De Troia is tied for 13th overall with a 2-over, 146.
HOW IT HAPPENED – FIRST ROUND
- Duke opened the day on hole No. 10 at 7:45 a.m.
- The Blue Devils were led in round one by junior Andie Smith with a 2-under, 70.She opened the day with five pars, before reeling off three birdies over a span of four holes.Smith, who hails from Hobe Sound, Fla., got things started by rolling in a 12-foot birdie on No. 15.She then hit her 8-iron from 144 yards to four feet for birdie on No. 16.After a par on the 17th, Smith drained a 13-footer for birdie on No. 18.She suffered a 3-putt bogey on No. 1 and then got back to 3-under with a 2-putt birdie on the par-5 fifth hole.She closed with a bogey on No. 9 to finish with a 70.Smith had five up-and-downs on the morning and hit 13 greens.
- Anna Cañado Espinal and Katie Li each signed for a 78, while Carla De Troia had a 79 and Rylie Heflin posted an 82.
- Smith registered four birdies in round one, while the other four Blue Devils combined for six birdies.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SECOND ROUND
- Duke opened the second round on hole No. 1.
- After shooting even-par on the front nine with five pars, two birdies and two bogeys, De Troia got hot and shot 5-under over her final six holes to finish with a 5-under, 67.It was the lowest 18-hole score for the rookie.She started things off by draining a 39-foot birdie on No. 13.De Troia then hit her 9-iron from 141 yards to 13 feet for birdie on No. 14.On the par-5 No. 15, she had the shot of the day as she struck her hybrid from 188 yards and settled to inches for eagle.De Troia had another eagle putt on No. 18 and settled with a birdie.She hit 11 fairways, 15 greens and had 31 putts in the afternoon.
- Smith had a slow start in round two dropping five shots over her first 11 holes, but closed with an even-par score over her final seven holes to finish with a 77.This included a 15-footer for birdie on No. 16 and 10-foot birdie on No. 18.
- Boosted by and eagle and birdie late in her round, Heflin posted a 78.A native of Avondale, Pa., Heflin hit her 3-hybrid from 212 yards on the par-5 No. 15 green in two.She then rolled in a 40-footer for eagle.Heflin parred the next two holes, which included a sand-save on No. 16.She was on the par-5 No. 18 in two as well and two-putted for birdie.She hit 11 fairways and 11 greens on the afternoon.
- Espinal was limited to only one birdie and signed for a 79, while Li had two birdies and had an 80.
NOTES
- Duke's score of 305 in round one is the highest the Blue Devils have shot in the ACC Championship since 2009 (309).Both tournaments were held at Sedgefield.
- The eagle for Heflin was the second of her senior season, while De Troia posted her fourth of the year.
- The Blue Devils closed strong shooting 5-under-par over the final four holes to finish the second round.
- Smith finished the day with nine up-and-downs over the 36 holes. She shot 1-under-par on par-3 holes, which was tied for the second-lowest score among the field.
- Smith notched her team-best 11th round of even or under par in the first round.
- Duke had 21 birdies over the first 36 holes.
- De Troia totaled her fourth career round in the 60s and the second over the last three rounds she has played.
- The round of 67 for De Troia was tied for the third-lowest individual round at an ACC Championship.Her teammate, Li, also turned in a 67 as a freshman a season ago.
- As a team, Duke shot rounds of 305 and 301 for a 30-over, 606.The Blue Devils sit in 14th overall place with the top six teams after Friday's round advancing to match play.
