CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke men's golf completed its first 36 holes of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday, April 12 and are tied for sixth place entering Sunday's final round at Finley Golf Club. The Blue Devils sit at 12-over, 572, following the first day of action.
Kelly Chinn paced Duke's lineup across the first two rounds and is tied for 11th overall at 1-over, 141.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND ONE
- As a team, Duke registered a 10-over, 290, in the first round.
- Bryan Kim led the morning effort, firing an even-par, 70. The sophomore began his day with a bogey on No. 1, but birdied the lone front-nine par-5, No. 8, to make the turn at even-par. He rolled in back-to-back birdies on No. 11 and 12 to reach red figures for the first time but ended at even-par following a closing double-bogey on No. 18.
- Kelly Chinn shot a 2-over, 72, in his morning round. After starting on No. 3 with a bogey, the senior used birdies on No. 4 and 8 to offset a double-bogey on No. 5 to remain at 1-over as he moved to the back-nine. Chinn rolled in nine pars on the second half of the course before a final dropped shot on No. 2 closed out his 2-over round.
- Ethan Evans signed for a 3-over, 73, in the first round. Evans rolled in four total birdies, including a stretch of three consecutive on holes No. 11-13, but dropped shots on six holes across his round to finish at 3-over.
- Daniel Choi and Luke Sample rounded out the lineup at 5-over and 6-over, respectively.
- Four individuals also competed for Duke, with John Peters leading the way in the first round with a 3-over, 73. John Hiller and Sam Mukherjee each posted a 5-over, 75, while Oliver Mukherjee signed for a 10-over, 80.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND TWO
- The Blue Devils improved in the afternoon, finishing at 2-over, 282, in the second round.
- Kelly Chinn finished under-par in the second round, with a 1-under, 69, effort. The senior started with a par on No. 3 before briefly moving over-par with a bogey on No. 4, which was erased with back-to-back birdies on his next two holes, the 508-yard, par-4, fourth and 185-yard, uphill, par-3 sixth. Chinn rolled in another pair of birdies, on No. 9 and No. 10, to reach 3-under for his round before playing his final 10 holes with eight pars and just two bogeys to end at 1-under for the round.
- Luke Sample signed for an even-par 70 in his second round. After two early bogeys on No. 1 and No. 5, the senior rolled in his first birdie of the day on the par-5 eighth, making the turn at 1-over. Two more birdies, on No. 10 and No. 12, pushed the senior under-par, before a closing bogey on the 18th capped his even-par afternoon round.
- Ethan Evans shot a 1-over, 71, to close his first day of action. Evans began the round on No. 2 and sandwiched a lone bogey between birdies on No. 4 and No. 8, turning to the back-nine at 1-under. After playing No. 12 and 13 at 3-over total, the junior rolled in a final birdie of the day on the par-5 15th before four straight pars helped secure a 1-over scorecard.
- Bryan Kim played the front-nine at 1-under, with eight pars and a lone birdie, on No. 4, before dropped three shots on the back-nine to finish at 2-over, 72, for the second round.
- Daniel Choi rounded out Duke's lineup with a 3-over, 73, to end the first day of play.
- John Peters again led all Duke individuals in the second round, firing a 4-over, 74. Sam Mukherjee shot a 5-over, 75, while both John Hiller and Oliver Mukherjee registered a 6-over, 76.
UP NEXT
- Duke's lineup plays the third round alongside Jacksonville and UCF, teeing off of No. 1, beginning at 8:44 a.m. Individually, John Peters will tee off at 8:20 a.m., on No. 1, followed by Oliver Mukherjee and Sam Mukherjee at 8:32 a.m. John Hiller will tee off of No. 10 at 9:55 a.m.
