DURHAM, N.C. – Eighth-ranked Duke (14-6) fell to No. 19 South Carolina (19-0), 12-7, in the series finale on Sunday at Duke Softball Stadium. The Gamecocks outscored the Blue Devils, 30-16, on the weekend to secure the three-game sweep.
The duo of graduate student
Dani Drogemuller and junior
Cassidy Curd shared the circle during the contest. Drogemuller was pinned with just her second loss of the season after working 2.1 innings and surrendering six runs off six hits. Curd tossed 4.1 innings of relief and matched South Carolina's Sam Gress for a game-high five strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Ana Gold jumpstarted Duke's offense in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run over the left field wall. The long ball also brought in junior Aminah Vega, who led off with a base hit. Later in the frame, sophomore Linh Le laced a two-RBI single through the left side to give Duke a 4-0 lead.
- South Carolina immediately answered in the top of the second, using back-to-back doubles and a two-run shot from Natalie Heath to pull within one run.
- The Gamecocks then added a five-run frame in the top of the third, highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs, to stretch their lead to 8-4.
- Redshirt sophomore Kairi Rodriguez cut the Blue Devils' deficit to one with a three-run blast out of left field in the bottom of the fourth.
- It remained a one-run game until the Gamecocks' offense exploded again in the top of the seventh, adding four runs off two hits and a pair of sacrifice flies to pull away, 12-7.
NOTES
- Gold and Rodriguez tallied their fourth and second home runs on the year, respectively.
- Gold's home run marked her second of the weekend series after sending out a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning on Saturday.
- Drogemuller moves to 5-2 in the circle after 10 appearances.
- The Blue Devils were swept in a three-game series for the first time since April 11, 2021 against No. 9 Florida State in Tallahassee.
- South Carolina now leads the all-time series 5-3.
