DURHAM, N.C.— Coming off a week with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers and a double overtime game-winning goal, junior
Aidan Maguire was named to the USILA Team of the Week.
Maguire helped spearhead Duke's defensive effort in a 2-0 week. The Blue Devils downed Providence (16-10) and Richmond (13-12 2OT) to improve to 8-1.
Maguire is the second Blue Devil to garner a USILA Team of the Week nod this season. This is his first award from the organization following his second career ACC Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
In a midweek matchup with the Friars, Maguire recorded a career-high four caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls. The Hingham, Massachusetts native was instrumental in holding Providence scoreless for 17:57 as Duke built a 7-1 lead. His four takeaways marked his fourth game this season with at least three takeaways.
Three days later, Maguire provided the heroics with the winning goal 15 seconds into the second overtime. After
Cole Krauss scooped up the ground ball off the opening faceoff and flipped the ball to Maguire, the stalwart defender raced down the field to score the winning goal. It was his second goal of the season and capped a solid day of three ground balls and one caused turnover against No. 14 Richmond.
The one caused turnover against the Spiders gave him 20 for the season – the first short-stick midfielder to reach 20 in a single season. He has 45 for his career, setting the Duke defensive midfield record while his 20 are just 14 shy of matching the NCAA record for the position.
Seventh-ranked Duke (8-1) travels to Dallas, Texas this weekend to take on Denver (4-4). Faceoff is set for March 22 at 8 pm (ET).
