MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Duke men's golf began play at the General James Hackler Championship with a 7-under, 281, on Sunday, March 16 and sit in second place following the opening 18 holes of play. The Blue Devils only trail top-ranked Auburn on the team leaderboard, by three shots, and have two individuals inside the top 10.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke finished under-par for the fourth time in its last five rounds, shooting a 7-under, 281, in the first round.
- Ethan Evans was the low Blue Devil in the first round, signing for a 3-under, 69.  Back-to-back birdies, on No. 4 and 5, helped the junior start the day in red figures. His lone bogey of the day came right after, on No. 6, as he made the turn at 1-under. A bogey-free back-nine, with birdies on the par-4 10th and 640-yard, par-5, 13th, moved Evans up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth at 3-under.Â
- William Love used a hot start to his tournament to open with a 2-under, 70 on Sunday. The junior rolled in four birdies across a six-hole stretch, spanning No. 3 through No. 8, taking advantage of both front-nine par-5's to help make the turn at 4-under. Love tallied one more birdie on the back-nine, but three dropped shots moved him back to 2-under and into a tie for ninth.
- Both Kelly Chinn and Bryan Kim posted a 1-under, 71, in the opening round.
- Chinn played the front-nine at 1-over, sandwiching one birdie between two bogeys, before catching fire to start the back-nine, with birdies on No. 10, 13 and 15 to get into red figures. A closing bogey was the lone stumble in the second half of his round.
- Kim, like his teammate, also played the front-nine at 1-over after two birdies and three bogeys in the first nine holes. A bogey on No. 14 was quickly erased with an eagle-birdie on No. 15 and 16 and secured the sophomore's under-par effort.Â
- Luke Sample finished at 5-over, 77, in the first round to round out Duke's lineup in Sunday's first round.
