KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 7 Tennessee softball team squeaked past No. 16 Duke 1-0 Tuesday evening inside Lee Stadium. The Volunteers limited the Blue Devils to two hits, struck out 10 and made a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the first stand up.

Cassidy Curd matched Tennessee 2024 consensus First Team All-America Karlyn Pickens (7-3) nearly pitch for pitch all night in the circle. The three combined for 17 strikeouts and just six hits allowed, five singles, in the pitching battle. Drogemuller (6-3) suffered the setback despite yielding just three hits and one run while fanning three in her four innings of work. Curd went the final two frames and surrendered one hit and one walk and struck out four.
Duke falls to 17-8 while Tennessee improves to 22-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With two outs in the bottom of the first, Tennessee's Taylor Pannell sent a solo homer over the wall in left.
- After having just one base runner through the first three innings, Duke had its best scoring opportunity in the fourth. Senior Ana Gold led off with a single, Duke's first of the contest. Two outs later, a walk to Thessa Malau'ulu put two on, but a strikeout ended the threat.
- Tennessee tried to add another in the bottom of the sixth but could not convert. After the first two batters of the inning reached with a bunt single and walk, Curd rebounded with two whiffs and an infield pop out to keep it a one-run affair.
- The Blue Devils went retired in order in the fifth and sixth, but sophomore Amiah Burgess led off the seventh with a single up the middle. A groundout moved Burgess to second and she advanced to third on a fly out to the wall in center. A strikeout ended the rally attempt and preserved the Tennessee victory.
NOTES
- Burgess extended her hitting streak to a team-high four games. She also owns the team's longest stretch of games reaching base safely at eight.
- Duke extended its streak to five consecutive games with six or more strikeouts.
- The Blue Devils matched their season low in hits with two.
- Duke tied its season high with 10 strikeouts.
