DURHAM, N.C. – Eighth-ranked Duke (14-4) had its 10-game winning streak snapped as No. 19 South Carolina defeated the Blue Devils, 14-7, in the weekend series opener at Duke Softball Stadium Friday night.
Redshirt sophomore
Kairi Rodriguez and junior
Aminah Vega led the offense, batting 3-for-4 on the night. Rodriguez tallied a pair of RBI-doubles while Vega blasted a solo home run to drive in four of Duke's seven runs.
Juniors
Cassidy Curd and
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon and freshman
Gabriella Mike saw action in the circle. Curd was ultimately tagged with the loss after tossing the first 2.2 innings, allowing six runs off four hits with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vega opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after sending a two-out triple to the right field wall and coming home on an RBI-single from sophomore Amiah Burgess to give Duke an early 1-0 lead.
- The Gamecocks answered in the top of the third with a six-run frame, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Arianna Rodi, to pull ahead, 6-1.
- Vega added another Duke run in the home half with a solo blast out of left field.
- Rodriguez cut into South Carolina's lead in the bottom of the fourth, sending an RBI-double deep into left center field. Her knock scored graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu, who drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, junior KK Mathis brought in classmate Aleyah Terrell, pinch running for Rodriguez, on a double to center field to make it a 6-4 game.
- South Carolina's offense erupted again in the top of the seventh, posting eight runs off six hits and two errors to extend the gap to 14-4.
- Duke tried to complete the comeback, sparking a two-out rally to tack on three additional runs but the effort wasn't enough to make up the difference.
NOTES
- Mike made her first collegiate appearance in the circle after entering the game in the top of the seventh.
- Curd moves her season ledger to 5-2 after 11 appearances.
- Rodriguez tallied her third multi-RBI game on the year.
- Vega blasted her second home run of the season and 26th of her career.
