CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - No. 11 Duke (12-3) extended its winning streak to eight games after defeating BYU, 1-0, and Minnesota, 2-0, on day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
Graduate student
Dani Drogemuller and junior
Cassidy Curd controlled the circle during the two contests. Drogemuller earned the start and the win against BYU, surrendering four hits while collecting a season-high seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. The Frankfort, Ill., native picked up her second win on the day against Minnesota after tossing the first 5.0 innings while allowing just three hits and a walk. Curd was credited with saves in both games for her 3.0 innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. BYU
- Junior Aminah Vega plated the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the first using a single up the middle to score senior Ana Gold, who reached on a double to right-center field. Vega advanced to third on the throw but was unable to come home as the Cougars put the two remaining outs away with back-to-back strikeouts.
- It remained a one-run game as Drogemuller and BYU's Kate Dahle combined to allow just five hits over the next six frames.
- The Cougars attempted to battle back in the top of the seventh, moving two runners into scoring position on a base hit, Blue Devil error and a groundout. However, Curd entered the game and struck out the final two batters to leave the go-ahead run stranded.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. MINNESOTA
- Minnesota was quick to load the bases in the opening frame, using a single, hit by pitch and a walk, before the Blue Devils grabbed the third out to leave the bases loaded.
- Drogemuller then settled in and did not allow a runner to advance into scoring position until the top of the sixth inning.
- Redshirt junior Jada Baker put the Blue Devils in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI-single to bring in sophomore Amiah Burgess from second. Burgess reached on an infield single before moving up on a groundout from freshman Brooklinn Thomas.
- The next three frames went scoreless until Burgess added an extra insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, sending a double to the left field wall to score Vega from second and make it a 2-0 game.
- In the top of the seventh, Curd retired the final three Minnesota batters in order to seal the victory.
NOTES
- With the pair of wins, Drogemuller improves her season ledger to 4-1.
- Curd tallied her fifth and sixth career saves.
- Vega powered the offense during the two games, batting 4-for-6 with one run scored. She drove in one run during the opening game and now owns a team-leading 19 RBI on the year.
- Baker and Burgess recorded their third and fourth RBI of the season, respectively.
