DURHAM, N.C. -- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association recently announced its 2023 NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction. Duke's trio of
Julia Boehringer,
Issy Carey and
Alaina McVeigh represented the Blue Devils on the list.
This is the fourth consecutive Scholar of Distinction award for Carey while McVeigh garners her third and Boehringer makes her debut on the list.
Seeing the field in all 20 games as a freshman, Boehringer finished her first season as a Blue Devil with a goal and an assist. The Munich, Germany native notched her first collegiate points with a goal at California. She followed that with an assist in the win at Stanford. One of the first players off the bench for the Blue Devils, Boehringer fired a season-high three shots in her first career game – a 5-0 win over William & Mary.
Carey, a four-year member of the Duke field hockey team, provided depth to the Blue Devils' attack this season. She played in 13 games and finished with an assist in the ACC Championship quarterfinal win over Wake Forest. Playing in 52 career games with 11 starting assignments, Carey has 11 goals and six assists for 28 points over her three years on the turf. A standout in the classroom as well, she has earned Dean's List Honors with Distinction in each of her semesters at Duke.
The 2024 ACC Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year, McVeigh has been Duke's offensive leader for the past two seasons. The first Blue Devil to earn All-America honors in consecutive seasons since Margaux Paolino did so in 2018 and 2019, McVeigh headlined the Blue Devils in the scoring column with 13 goals and two assists for 28 points this season. She scored a goal in all but five games in which Duke got on the board and finished the year with three two-goal games. The 2023 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, McVeigh eclipsed the 20-point mark for the second consecutive season. In her two years on the turf, McVeigh has 30 goals and 65 points to rank 20th and 26th in Duke history, respectively.
Duke finished the 2024 campaign with a 13-7 overall record, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked North Carolina. The Blue Devils finished second in the ACC and ranked ninth heading into NCAA postseason action.
