DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team (5-1) will return to action this weekend as the 14th-ranked Blue Devils host a pair of nationally-ranked opponents inside Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Duke welcome 17th-ranked Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m., and then sixth-ranked Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m.
Admission is free and parking will be available in the blue zone lot adjacent to the tennis center.
The Series with Ohio State
Duke and Ohio State will meet for the 11th time in program history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 8-2. The Buckeyes have won two out of the last three meetings with both wins coming in Columbus, Ohio.
Last year, Ohio State defeated Duke on Feb. 2 in Columbus, 4-0. In matches played in Durham, the Blue Devils hold a 3-0 ledger. Duke head coach

Scouting Ohio State
Ohio State currently features a 4-1 record and is coming off totaling a 6-1 win against Notre Dame and falling, 4-3, to 18th-ranked Tennessee in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Buckeyes also defeated 10th-ranked NC State in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, 4-1, as well.
In the ITA rankings, Luciana Perry (9), Teah Chavez (55), Audrey Spencer (60) and Nao Nishino (107) are ranked in singles. In doubles, Alessia Cau/Dani Schoenly (63) are listed. As a team, the Buckeyes are ranked No. 17 nationally.
Duke Versus the Big Ten
The Blue Devils own an all-time 137-30 record against Big Ten opponents – Illinois (8-1), Indiana (20-9), Iowa (2-0), Maryland (40-2), Michigan (11-3), Nebraska (2-0), Northwestern (22-5), Ohio State (8-2), Oregon (1-0), Purdue (3-0), UCLA (5-7), Southern California (3-0), Washington (4-0) and Wisconsin (8-1).

Duke and Michigan will meet for the 15th time in program history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 11-3. At home in Durham, the Blue Devils are 4-1 with the most recent meeting coming on April 6, 2016 with Michigan taking a 4-3 victory. Duke head coach

Scouting Michigan
Michigan enters the contest with a 6-1 ledger and is coming off totaling a 2-1 mark at the National Team Indoors with wins over 16th-ranked LSU and 11th-ranked Texas. The Wolverines also dropped a 4-3 decision to 12th-ranked Oklahoma.
In the ITA rankings, Julia Fliegner (4), Piper Charney (30), Lily Jones (36) and Reese Miller (66) are ranked in singles. In doubles, Jessica Bernales/Jones (21), Charney/Bernales (27), Miller/Fliegner (45) and Charney/Emily Sartz-Lunde (60) are ranked. As a team, Michigan is ranked No. 6 nationally.
What is Next
Duke will next open ACC play at Boston College (Feb. 21) and Syracuse (Feb. 23) next weekend.
Blue Devils Versus Top 10 Opponents
Duke hosts a top 10 opponent inside Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday for the 13th time since the building was opened in 2000. The Blue Devils are 8-4 overall and have won five-straight against top 10 opponents inside Sheffield.

In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Duke dropped to No. 9 nationally.

Balus Nets ACC Honor
Duke rookie
Irina Balus was selected as the ACC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 28, after totaling a 3-0 ledger in singles action for the Blue Devils.
Balus, who hails from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, collected a 3-1 ledger in singles with all three wins coming against ranked opponents. Playing at the No. 1 singles slot, Balus opened the week with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over 21st-ranked Ozlem Uslu of Virginia Tech on Monday and then was leading Alejandra Hidalgo of N.C. Central, 6-2, 4-1, before the match was clinched to close the day.
In the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Charlottesville, Balus posted a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against 17th-ranked Sarah Hamner of South Carolina and then totaled a 6-4, 6-1 win against 32nd-ranked Annabelle Xu of Virginia.
Balus also totaled a 2-1 ledger in doubles play with the lone loss coming to the second-ranked team nationally at Virginia. She teamed with
Ellie Coleman to defeat Virginia Tech and South Carolina during the week.
Balus has been very impressive so far during her rookie campaign registering a 12-2 overall and 5-0 dual match ledger with six of those wins coming against ranked foes. She has also collected an 11-5 mark in doubles play. Balus competed in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship in the fall and earned All-America accolades along the way in doubles.
New Additions, Big Impact
The Blue Devils brought in three newcomers in the fall and all three have made a big impact on the success of the squad.
Irina Balus (7-2),
Eleana Yu (7-3) and
Ava Krug (5-2) combined to total a 19-7 singles ledger and 16-7 doubles mark in the fall. Both Balus and Krug are freshmen, while Yu is a sophomore who spent the previous season at Stanford. They have extended it into the spring with a 30-7 mark in singles.

Jamie Ashworth is in his 29th season with the Blue Devils and owns an impressive 617-159 ledger. Last season, Ashworth registered his 600th victory on Jan. 20 in a 4-2 win over Illinois. He accomplished this mark in only 747 matches becoming the quickest coach to 600 wins.

Among the winningest coaches of all time, Ashworth ranks 11th with a 79.6 winning percentage, seventh with 617 wins, fourth for winningest active coaches by percentage (79.6) and second for winningest active coaches by victories.
Big Sets for Little Hearts
The Duke men's and women's tennis programs announced a partnership with the Duke Children's Hospital Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center called Big Sets for Little Hearts this past fall.
Big Sets for Little Hearts pledges will be made based on the number of sets won by the men's and women's tennis programs. Last year, both tennis teams combined for 647 sets won.

Noting the Blue Devils
- Emma Jackson posted her 14th career match-clinching point against 20th-ranked South Carolina to move her into 10th all-time on the Blue Devil record charts.
- Duke freshman Ava Krug has a couple of familiar faces around Durham this season as her brothers, Jake and Connor, are seniors on the Blue Devil men's tennis team.
- The Blue Devils have won 61 out of the last 62 matches when winning the doubles point. Duke had won 47 in a row, before a defeat in the NCAA Tournament second round last season to UCLA.
- Duke has featured a stellar home court advantage over the years and have boasted a 111-5 ledger over the last 18 years. Since opening the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, the Blue Devils have posted a 142-9 record over 25 years.
- To start the 2025 regular season, the Blue Devils feature a 22-6 dual match ledger in singles with Irina Balus (5-0), Eleana Yu (2-0) and Ava Krug (3-0) leading the way.
