DURHAM, N.C.— In recognition of her excellence in the classroom and on the turf, Duke forward
Alaina McVeigh has been named the 2024 ACC Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year the conference announced Thursday.
This marks the second consecutive year a Duke student-athlete has won the prestigious award after Piper Hampsch became the Blue Devils' first recipient since 2014. McVeigh's recognition marks the fifth time in program history a Blue Devil has earned the distinction.
Overall, 18 Blue Devils earned All-ACC Academic honors tying Louisville for the second most in the league. Wake Forest led the way with 19 recipients. Joining McVeigh on the team are

Duke's offensive leader, McVeigh is the first Blue Devil to earn All-America honors in consecutive seasons since Margaux Paolino did so in 2018 and 2019. McVeigh headlined the Blue Devils in the scoring column with 13 goals and two assists for 28 points, scoring a goal in all but five games in which Duke got on the board. She finished the year with three two-goal games in 2024. The 2023 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, McVeigh eclipsed the 20-point mark for the second consecutive season. In her two years on the turf, McVeigh has 30 goals and 65 points to rank 20th and 26th in Duke history, respectively.
McVeigh's academic resume is equally as impressive. She is one of four Blue Devils to earn Dean's List with Distinction this past fall and has landed on the exclusive list in each of her semesters at Duke. This past semester, McVeigh posted a 4.0 grade point average and has an overall grade point average of 3.95.
Duke finished the 2024 campaign with a 13-7 overall record, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked North Carolina. The Blue Devils finished second in the ACC and ranked ninth heading into NCAA postseason action.
