The senior trio of Bard, Johnson and Maguire were three of the main anchors to Duke's defense last season, while Johnston returns as the junior leader to the Blue Devils' first midfield line.
Playing both close defense and longstick midfield during his three seasons, Bard has played in 52 career games with 26 starting assignments. The Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, native registered a career-best 17 caused turnovers last season and has 34 for his career. He also picked up 16 ground balls and dished a pair of assists. Bard finished his junior season strong, collecting nine of his 17 caused turnovers in the final six games of the season, including a career-high four against rival North Carolina.
Johnson made a splash in his first year as a starter on close defense, earning All-ACC and USILA All-America second team honors. Drawing the matchup against the opponents' top attackman, Johnson finished the season with a team-high 32 caused turnovers to rank tied for second in Duke single-season history. He registered a takeaway in 14 games and caused multiple turnovers in 11 contests. Dramatically improved in the clearing game, Johnson also was credited with two assists.
A starter from day one, Johnston is back for his third season as one of Duke's premier midfielders. He has 49 goals and 15 assists in his 37 career games and is on pace to surpass the 100-point mark this season. Registering 28 goals and seven assists for 35 points in 2025, the Lake Forest, Illinois, native earned All-ACC and USILA All-America Second Team honors as just a sophomore. He has at least one point in 34 of his 37 outings and owns four hat tricks from the midfield position.
The top short stick defensive midfielder in college lacrosse, Maguire was an unbeatable force for Duke's defensive unit last season. The Hingham, Massachusetts, native reaped the awards, earning the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Lt. Donald MacLaughlin National Midfielder of the Year awards. He was a consensus first-team All-America pick after ranking second on the team with 26 caused turnovers and picking up 57 ground balls. His 26 takeaways ranked tied for fifth in NCAA single-season history by a SSDM and tied for seventh overall in the Duke records book.
