DURHAM, N.C. – Duke graduate running back Star Thomas was named the ACC Running Back of the Week following Duke's 21-20 comeback victory over North Carolina on Saturday night.
Thomas, a Homer, La., native finished with 166 rushing yards on 30 carries and a touchdown. He added two receptions for 45 yards and a score. Thomas gained 122 of his 166 ground yards after intermission against the Tar Heels, including 78 in the fourth quarter, as Duke erased deficits of 17-0 at halftime and 20-0 in the third quarter.
On Saturday, Thomas caught a 29-yard pass for a touchdown in the third quarter and scooted two yards on the ground for another score in the fourth quarter to become the first Blue Devil with a rushing and receiving score in the same game since Mataeo Durant against Northwestern on September 18, 2021.
In the last three games, Thomas has gained 399 ground yards, rushed for three touchdowns and added one receiving score. He has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in all three tilts and is the first Blue Devil with three consecutive 100-yard rushing performances since Durant on September 25 (vs. Kansas/124), October 2 (vs. North Carolina/114) and October 9 (vs. Georgia Tech/152), 2021. Thomas is just the sixth Duke running back to have three or more consecutive 100-yard ground games.
Thomas' 211 all-purpose yards (166 rush; 45 receiving) against North Carolina are the eighth most by a Blue Devil since 2000 and the most since Durant's 296 (255 rush; 41 receiving) versus Charlotte on September 3, 2021. Thomas' 166 total rushing yards versus the Tar Heels marked the second-highest single-game total by a Duke running back in a win over UNC, trailing only a 193-yard performance by Jack Alexander in 1935.
The ACC's other weekly honors included Miami's Cam Ward (quarterback), Syracuse's Jackson Meeks (wide receiver), Boston College's Donovan Ezeiruaku (defensive line), SMU's Kobe Wilson (linebacker), NC State's DK Kaufman (defensive back), Virginia Tech's John Love (specialist) and Stanford's Micah Ford (rookie).
