DURHAM, N.C. – Nearly 50 Duke Athletics staff and student-athletes united on Thursday, Sept. 19, for the department's annual 919 Day of Service, dedicating their time to impactful community engagement. Embracing the spirit of the Triangle area, Blue Devils participated in a range of meaningful volunteer opportunities across Durham, furthering Duke Athletics' commitment to making a positive impact beyond sports.
The day began at SEEDS, an urban garden and kitchen classroom in the heart of Durham. From planting and harvesting to composting, volunteers supported SEEDS' mission to educate young people through hands-on experiences with food and nature.
Simultaneously, other teams were hard at work across the Bull City. Volunteers at the Durham Community Food Pantry helped distribute food to families in need, supporting the organization's goal of ending food insecurity in Durham and Orange counties. At the Ronald McDonald House, Blue Devils moved furniture and supplies to create a new pumping room for nursing mothers and organized pantry items, finishing with a thorough cleanup of the kitchen and dining hall.
In the afternoon, Duke Athletics' commitment to service continued at Duke Campus Farm, where Blue Devils engaged with the farm's mission of sustainable agriculture. From planting to tending crops, participants contributed to the farm's educational efforts on food systems and sustainability.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties and the Emily K Center also received helping hands from Duke volunteers, who assisted with after-school programs, homework help and engaging activities designed to support local youth.
The 919 Day of Service highlights Duke Athletics' ongoing commitment to the Durham community, offering staff and student-athletes a chance to connect with local organizations and make a meaningful impact. By championing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, this annual event reinforces Duke Athletics' mission of community engagement and support.
