Katie Li fired a 6-under, 66, to open action at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M, Duke women's golf junior
Andie Smith carded a tournament-best 7-under, 65, to help the Blue Devils move up the leaderboard at the 6,395-yard, par-72 Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo.
A native of Hobe Sound, Fla., Smith collected eight birdies and tied a career-low round by shooting 65. She is just the seventh Blue Devil to record multiple rounds of 65 or better over the storied history of the Duke program (

As a team, Duke fired the second-lowest round of the day with a 2-under, 286, to move up the leaderboard to third overall with a 1-over, 577. Li enters the final round with a 3-under, 141, in sixth place, while Smith is tied for 13th with an even-par, 144.
How It Happened
- For the second consecutive day, Duke opened action on hole No. 10.
- Andie Smith went off second for the Blue Devils and had Duke's best start of the morning as she stuck her approach shot to five feet on No. 11 from 144 yards with her 7-iron for birdie. She then drained a 10-footer for birdie on No. 13 to get to 2-under through four holes. Smith hit a half swing 60-degree wedge from 49 yards on No. 15 and sank the 5-footer for birdie to get to 3-under. After an up-and-down par on No. 16, she closed the first nine holes with a 2-putt birdie on No. 18. Smith got up-and-down for par on No. 1 and then sank an 8-foot birdie on No. 2 to move to 5-under. She then rolled in a 15-foot birdie on No. 3 and was 6-under through 12 holes. After hitting the green and rolling off on No. 6, Smith finished with her lone bogey of the day. She closed strong though by sinking another 15-foot birdie on No. 8 and 2-putting for birdie on No. 9 to close with a 65.
- After going bogey-free in round one, sophomore Katie Li struggled with her driver a little on Tuesday as she finished with a 3-over, 75. She had a solid start parring the first three holes and then hitting her 54-degree wedge from 93 yards to three feet for birdie. She headed to the par-5 No. 17 at 1-under-par, but hit her drive left and ended up with her first bogey of the tournament. Li, who is from Basking Ridge, N.J., had a double-bogey on No. 18 and bogey on No. 1 to fall to 3-over for the day. She was able to get a couple of strokes back on holes No. 3 and No. 4. Li sank a 12-footer for birdie on the 320-yard, par-4 third hole and then hit her 54-degree wedge from 81 yards to two feet on No. 4. She got in trouble on No. 8 and suffered a double-bogey and parred No. 9 to close the day. She hit 10 greens, nine fairways and rolled 29 putts.
- Senior Rylie Heflin turned in another solid round Tuesday as she posted a 1-over, 73, and is tied for 16th heading into the final round. After suffering a bogey on her opening hole, she responded by hitting her 7-iron from 150 yards to 10 feet and drained the birdie to return to even. Heflin, a product of Avondale, Pa., then used her pitching wedge from 115 yards and stuck it to eight feet for birdie on No. 13 to get in the red. She bogeyed No. 14 and No. 17, while making the turn at 1-over, 37. Heflin hit a beautiful pitching wedge to three feet on the par-5 second hole to return to even again. She suffered bogeys on the two par three holes, but finished well by hitting the par-5 No. 9 green in two and 2-putted for birdie to finish with a 73. She hit 11 fairways, 12 greens and had 31 putts.
- In her second collegiate round, freshman Anna Cañado Espinal posted three birdies en route to registering a career-best 1-over-par, 73. Through 36 holes, Espinal is tied for 24th with a 147. She kicked off her morning with a bogey on No. 10 and then had three straight pars. On No. 14, Espinal hit a three quarter 58-degree wedge from 80 yards to seven feet for birdie. After hitting her tee shot just off the fairway on No. 15, she suffered a double-bogey. Espinal finished very well though playing her final 12 holes at 1-under-par. She hit her 58-degree wedge on the par-5 second hole to three feet from 84 yards out on No. 2 for her third birdie of the day.
- Fellow rookie Carla De Troia posted a 4-over, 76, in the second round, which included her first two collegiate birdies on No. 8 and No. 14. On the challenging 372-yard, par-4 No. 14, she hit her 54-degree wedge from 92 yards to four feet and sank the birdie. De Troia also rolled in a 4-footer for birdie on No. 8 as she hit her 7-iron from 159 yards. She hit 10 fairways, 10 greens and rolled 32 putts on the day.
- South Carolina holds the team lead with a 19-under, 557, with Wake Forest (574), Duke (577), Oregon (579) and California (582) rounding out the top five.
Notes
- Andie Smith posted her 11th career round in the 60s and the 25th score of even or under par over her first three years.
- Smith totaled 26 putts on the day, while hitting 14 greens and 12 fairways. She has carded 10 birdies over the first two days, which ranks tied for third most.
- Katie Li is 2-under-par on par-3 holes, which is tied for second among the field.
- Anna Cañado Espinal has played holes No. 1-9 at 1-under-par through 36 holes.
- Carla De Troia leads the Blue Devils with 25 pars over two rounds.
- As a team, Duke posted 20 birdies on the day and owns 34 over the first 36 holes, which is the second-most among the field.
- It marked the fourth straight year Duke has shot even or under par in the second round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
- Duke improved its score in the second round, while the field saw the average score move from 73.42 in round one to 74.07 in round two. High winds were causing havoc most of the round and got worse later in the day.
