HONG KONG – Duke sophomore
Caitlin Barrett scored four goals and added an assist to help lead the United States to a 33-1 victory over Australia in the semifinal of the 2024 World Lacrosse Women's U20 Championship Thursday morning from Mong Kok Stadium.
The U.S. advances to the championship game for the eighth straight time in the event's history and will look for its sixth overall championship when it meets Canada in Saturday's gold medal game at 6:30 pm local time (6:30 am Eastern).
The United States raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first 5:23 with Barrett providing the assist on the fifth goal. The U.S. stretched its lead to 9-0 after 15 minutes of action. The native of Manhasset, New York tacked on three more goals in a span of 10 minutes, including the final tally. Barrett also collected four draw controls in the victory.
The U.S. has won the World Lacrosse junior level women's championship five of the previous seven times it has been held and Australia was its opponent in four of those five championship game victories (1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011). Australia is also one of only two teams to ever beat the U.S in the junior world championship, beating the U.S. 5-4 in the inaugural championship game in 1995. Canada edged the U.S. in the 2015 championship game.
The gold medal game will be streamed live on World Lacrosse TV:
