COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 24th-ranked Duke women's soccer team traveled to Columbus, Ohio for the season opener on Thursday and dropped a 1-0 decision to Ohio State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
How It Happened
Ohio State had the first scoring chance of the evening as Jadin Bonham got past the Duke defense and fired a shot that hit the right crossbar and bounced back in front of the goal.Kailyn Dudukovich added another shot that was saved by Duke goalkeeper Leah Freeman.
All three of Ohio State's shots were in the first 16:04 of the match.
The Blue Devils came out and attempted the first two shots of the second half from Lageyre and fifth-year Katie Groff.
After a turnover by the Duke defense in the box, Ohio State's Dudukovich finished a one-v-one opportunity against Freeman to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead at the 54:12 mark.
Duke sophomore Mia Oliaro showed some excellent footwork and sent a right-footed shot off the left post in the 62nd minute.
The Blue Devils fired nine shots over the final 27 minutes, but couldn't get anything past the Buckeye defense.

The loss snapped a six-match winning streak in season openers.
Head coach Robbie Church dropped to 19-4-1 all-time in season openers.
The Blue Devils fell to 6-2 in the series with Ohio State, while Church fell to 4-2.
Junior Carina Lageyre led Duke with a career-high five shots.
As a team, Duke outshot Ohio State, 21-9, including a 15-6 advantage in the second half.
Graduate student midfielder Hannah Bebar made her Duke debut and attempted three shots, all on goal.
The Blue Devils held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Duke goalkeeper Leah Freeman played the entire 90 minutes and finished with two saves.
