Freeman Selected to Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior linebacker Tre Freeman has been selected to the 2024 Chuck Bednarik Award Preseason Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday.
Freeman returns at linebacker for the Blue Devils following a standout 2023 campaign that included Second Team All-ACC honors. Last season, he finished with double-digit tackles in five different games – including a season-best 15 tackles in Duke's 24-3 win over NC State. He tallied at least three tackles in all 13 games and finished with at least five tackles nine separate times. He was named the ACC Co-Linebacker of the Week after his 15-tackle showing against NC State, which included 1.5 tackles for loss and his first career interception. Freeman led the Blue Devils, and finished sixth in the ACC, with 106 tackles last season to become the first Duke player since 2019 to eclipse 100 tackles in a single season.
The Durham native enters the 2024 campaign as a preseason Second Team All-ACC selection by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele Publications. In 29 career games, Freeman has made 15 starts while recording 127 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, three passes broken up, one forced fumble and six quarterback pressures. Entering the 2024 campaign, he has tallied at least three tackles in 14 straight contests.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and was the last NFL player to be a full-time player on both offense and defense.
Duke's 2024 season opener is slated for Friday, August 30 when it welcomes Elon to Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
