PARIS - The Blue Devils wrapped competition at the 2024 Olympics on Sunday with action in basketball. Here is a recap from the final day of Olympic competition in France.
USA Outlasts France to Win Eighth Consecutive Gold Medal
Chelsea Gray and the U.S. Women's National Team secured their 61st straight victory and Olympic record eighth consecutive gold medal as the United States outlasted host-nation France, 67-66, in a thrilling Olympic final.
Gray, who earns her second career Olympic gold medal, dished out four assists and pulled down one rebound in the win. She started every game for the United States during the 2024 Olympic run and paced the team in assists per game with an average of 5.2 dimes. Duke women's basketball head coach Kara Lawson, an assistant for the USA, earns her second Olympic gold medal as a coach.
It was a physical 40 minutes of play with both teams giving the other side all it could manage. Deadlocked 25-25 at the half, France started the third quarter strong and jumped out to a 10-point advantage less than three minutes into the period. The United States ushered a response of its own, closing the stanza on a 20-8 spurt to take a 45-43 lead into the fourth.
The final quarter was a back-and-forth affair, the United States leading by as many as four points while France held its largest advantage at three. The Americans regained the advantage for good with just under four minutes to play, courtesy of a Breanna Stewart free throw and an A'ja Wilson jumper.
France refused to go away, however, as Gabby Williams came alive down the stretch scoring nine of her team's final 11 points. The U.S. had an answer every time though, getting a Kahleah Copper jumper and converting seven at the charity stripe – the last two giving the Americans a 67-64 lead with three seconds to play in regulation. The hosts had one final chance to send the game into overtime, but Williams' bucket at the buzzer was ruled a two-point field goal, and the United States escaped with the win.
