DURHAM, N.C. – No. 20 Duke men's soccer opened the preseason on Saturday afternoon at the 751 Practice Fields, drawing with Coastal Carolina, 0-0.
Wessel Speel registered the only save of the match, stopping a penalty kick from the Chants in the 33rd minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides felt each other out for the first 10 minutes before the Blue Devils registered two shots to start a flurry of offense.
- In the 33rd minute, Coastal Carolina was awarded a penalty kick, after a foul inside the box. Graduate student Wessel Speel dove to his right to keep the match scoreless in the first half, as Duke outshot the Chanticleers 7-1.
- To begin the second half, Coastal Carolina received a free-kick attempt in the 46th minute, sailing the shot high and wide.
- In the 60th minute, the Blue Devils enjoyed a slurry of shots, as Andrew Myerson played a ball through the box, but the shot was just wide.
- Late in the match, senior Felix Barajas was awarded a free kick just outside the box, after Sol Arbib drew a foul on an open chance. Barajas' shot would sail high, and the match would remain scoreless in the 86th minute.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils outshot the Chanticleers 11-4 on Saturday evening.
- Duke held the advantage in corners 10-3.
- Graduate student Wessel Speel registered the only save of the match, stopping a Coastal Carolina penalty kick in the first half.
