PARIS - The Blue Devils continued competition at the 2024 Olympics on Wednesday with action in triathlon, basketball, field hockey and soccer. Here is a recap from action on July 31 in France.
Pearson Places 31st in Triathlon for USA
Morgan Pearson finished 31st in the men's triathlon with the United States' second-best time of the day at 1:48.26.
Pearson, a 2011-12 Duke track & field letterwinner, closed out the event with the 16th-fastest time overall in the 10.0km run at 31:26.
Roma, Puerto Rico Suffer Slim Setback to Spain
Puerto Rico battled Spain in a tightly contested game, but ultimately dropped a slim 63-62 decision to Spain in the second game of Group A women's basketball play.
Facing an early 15-point second-half deficit, Puerto Rico outscored Spain 19-5 in the third quarter to slice away the deficit, then took the lead (47-46) via a three-pointer less than a minute into the fourth quarter. The sides went blow-for-blow over the remainder of the game with Puerto Rico taking a one-point margin with 10 seconds to go on Mya Hollingshed's basket. Spain stole the win, however, as Laura Gil got fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws with one second remaining.
Sofia Roma, who capped her two-year Duke career in 2019, contributed one point in 13 minutes of action for Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico concludes Group A competition on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 5 a.m. ET versus China (Peacock).
Crouse, United States Fall to World No. 5 Australia
Duke standout Leah Crouse started for the third straight game on defense as the United States fell to world No. 5 Australia, 3-0, in Pool B action.
The Hockeyroos started off fast, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the third minute of action. The United Eagles worked tirelessly on defense in the first half, but a tally from Alice Arnott in the 29th minutes sent Australia into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
The United States picked up their play in the second half, but were unable to capitalize on any of their four penalty corners or nine circle entries. Australia closed out scoring with a 53rd-minute goal.
USA will play Great Britain in a crucial match Thursday, August 1 at 11 a.m. ET, on USA Network. The United States are in fifth place in Pool B and a win over Team GB would put them in good contention to advance to the knockout round.
Tatum, United States Cruise to Victory over South Sudan
The United States secured a spot in the men's basketball quarterfinals courtesy of a convincing 103-86 triumph over South Sudan in Group C competition. Jayson Tatum started the contest and finished with four points, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in the win. Incoming Duke freshman Khaman Maluach played two minutes off the bench for South Sudan.
USA took control of the contest in the first half, bringing a 55-36 advantage into the locker room before reaching the century mark for the second time in as many games.
The United States wraps up group play on Saturday, Aug. 3 against Puerto Rico at 11:15 a.m. ET on NBC, while South Sudan follows that game against Serbia at 3 p.m. ET on Peacock.
