DURHAM – Recent Duke volleyball graduates
Lizzie Fleming and
Jess Robinson signed professional contracts to play volleyball in Europe. Fleming will compete with ASP Thetis in Voula, Greece, while Robinson signed with Nantes Neptunes in Nantes, France.
"We could not be more thrilled for Jess and Lizzie as they move forward into these incredible professional opportunities overseas," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "As a coach I find it so rewarding to see our players love the game so much that they choose to continue their volleyball careers. It has been an absolute privilege to have both of these women as part of Duke volleyball and they more than deserve the futures that await them. Both Nantes & ASP Thetis have gained dozens of new Blue Devil fans and while we are sad to see them go, we cannot wait to cheer Jess and Lizzie on from Durham."
A five-year staple for Duke volleyball, Fleming finished her career as one of the best middle blockers in recent history. The San Francisco, Calif., native tallied 739 kills for a .308 hitting percentage, 459 total blocks, 160 digs and 35 aces. She cemented herself in Duke's record books – seventh in total blocks (459), 10th in hitting percentage (.308), tied for second in matches played (131) and 10th in sets played (459).
In 2023, she hit over .400 percent 18 times, including a .667 percent against Virginia (9/24/23) with 10 kills and no errors on 15 swings. Her hitting percentage career-high is .700 (10k, 0e, 10a) versus Virginia Tech (11/7/21). Over the course of her career, she tallied four-or-more blocks in 65 games with a career-high of 13 during her freshman season against NC State (11/10/19).
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to play my first professional volleyball season overseas with ASP Thetis," Fleming said. "I am looking forward to competing in the Greek Super league in addition to experiencing and learning about the culture in Voula, Greece. I will forever be grateful for Duke volleyball for an incredible five years. This next step in my career would not have been possible without my teammates and coaches' support!"
ASP Thetis Volleyball Club is a professional volleyball club based right outside of Athens, Greece in the beachside town of Voula. The team competes in the Greek A1 Etniki, the highest level of the Greek Women's Volleyball League. ASP Thetis consistently ranks at the top of the Greek A1 League, although a League title has eluded them since the creation of the club in 2000. This makes ASP Thetis one of the youngest of the now 14 teams competing in the Greek A1 League which was founded in 1971.
ASP Thetis has garnered recent success with a fourth-place finish in the league during the 2023-24 season and a fifth place finish the preceding year in 2022-23. Given this recent success, ASP Thetis has qualified the past two years to compete in the prestigious Challenger Cup, the world's premier professional volleyball competition, and will do so again for the 2024-25 professional season as they work for their first Greek A1 title.
Robinson closed out her eligibility in Durham after a stellar career at Michigan, and she did not disappoint. She knocked down 244 kills and played to an outstanding .380 hitting percentage for the season, which ranked 10th in the conference. She led the team with 112.0 total blocks and was eighth in the ACC in blocks/set with 1.15.
She recorded 10 games with double-digit kills and posted one double-double at her alma mater with 10 kills and 10 total blocks. She produced three-plus blocks in 21 contests this fall and recorded zero errors in six contests. Robinson was vital in disrupting numerous offenses throughout the fall and held six opponents to below a .100 hitting percentage.
"After five amazing seasons of collegiate volleyball, my love for the sport has only grown and I feel so blessed to be able to continue my career playing volleyball overseas, especially for such a winning team as Nantes. To compete at the highest level has always been a dream and I am grateful to Duke volleyball for giving me the opportunity to hone my skills in the ACC and for providing such high-quality training and competition every day in the gym. I feel properly prepared from the last five years and I am so thankful to my coaches at Duke for believing in me and supporting my dreams by providing me with the high-level skills and connections to pursue them."
