DURHAM – Duke senior close defenseman
Kenny Brower headlined Duke's five USA Lacrosse Magazine All-Americans announced Thursday morning.
Brennan O'Neill and
Andrew McAdorey both garnered second-team recognition, while
Tyler Carpenter and
Josh Zawada were honorable mention picks.
Brower repeats as a first-team choice by the magazine, while O'Neill picks up his third All-America award from USA Lacrosse. This is a first All-America honor for McAdorey from the media outlet, while Carpenter and Zawada nabbed recognition for the second consecutive year.
Recently picked 15th in the Premier Lacrosse League College Draft, Brower is one of three Duke defenseman to earn All-ACC recognition three times. He has been a starter for the Blue Devils from day one in Durham, matching up with the opponent's top attackman in every game. The Massapequa, N.Y., native leads the Blue Devils with 18 caused turnovers this season while drawing the matchup with the opponent's top attackman in every game. A 2023 USILA First-Team All-American, Brower has played in 78 career games, Brower ranks fourth in Duke history with 72 caused turnovers.
One of the best attackmen to wear a Duke uniform, O'Neill has led the Blue Devil offense throughout his career. He became the third Blue Devil to win the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's best player, taking home the trophy in 2023. A four-time All-ACC pick, O'Neill has 202 goals and 98 assists to his name to rank fourth at Duke with 300 points.
With four goals against Syracuse in the ACC Championship semifinal, O'Neill became the fourth Duke player and eighth in NCAA DI history to reach the 200-goal benchmark. His goal in the ACC Championship final pushed him to 300 career points, the 21st Division I player to do so. An outstanding passer as well, O'Neill is just two assists away from becoming the second player in Duke history and fourth in NCAA DI lore to have 200 goals and 100 assists.
A versatile offensive player, McAdorey leads Duke's first midfield unit with 26 goals and nine assists for 35 points. He has scored at least a point in all 17 games this season and registered at least one goal in 15 of those. Returning to the midfield after one season at attack, McAdorey has not missed a beat. He has multiple goals in eight games and finished the ACC slate with six goals and one assist for seven points. The St. Anthony's product has started all 53 games in his career and has 85 goals and 50 assists for 135 points.
Joining the Blue Devils as a graduate student transfer after a standout career at Michigan, Zawada has not missed a beat since arriving in Durham. He leads Duke with 40 assists and is second in points with 69. Zawada has dished out three-plus assists in five games this year and registered five-plus points seven times. The Raleigh, N.C., native garnered All-ACC honors in his lone season in the league and has 148 goals and 134 assists for 282 points in his 66 career games. He ranks fourth among active players in points, sixth in assists and 15th in goals. He has 24 career hat tricks and 25 outings with at least five points.
Carpenter, a top longstick midfielder for the Blue Devils, has been a key part of Duke's success on defense and on the faceoff throughout his career. He leads all non-faceoff specialists in ground balls (48) and has 14 caused turnovers this season. Earning USILA All-America third team recognition in 2023, Carpenter has played in 77 career games and has amassed 79 caused turnovers to rank third on the Duke career list. Carpenter, outstanding off the ground, also has an impressive 276 ground balls in his five seasons in Durham.
The second-seeded Blue Devils (12-5) open NCAA Tournament action Saturday, May 11 against Utah. Faceoff is set for 2:30 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
