NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation has named Duke redshirt junior linebacker Tre Freeman to the 2024 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.
Freeman is one of 42 student-athlete nominated for the 21st annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, which honors the top defensive player in college football who makes the biggest impact for his team, both on and off the field.
Â
Freeman, a 6-0, 231-pound Durham, N.C., native led the Blue Devils and finished sixth in the ACC with 106 tackles in 2023 to become the first Duke player since 2019 to register 100-plus tackles in a single-season. The second team All-ACC selection added 5.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, one forced fumble and a team-high seven quarterback pressures just a season ago.
Â
In 29 career games, including 15 starts, Freeman has compiled 127 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, one caused fumble, and seven quarterback pressures. During his tenure, he has recorded two-plus tackles on 19 occasions and 10-plus stops five times, including a career-best 15 tackles against NC State in 2023.
Duke's most recent finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy was former Duke linebacker Ben Humphreys in 2017. The Blue Devils also had finalists for the award in 2014 and 2015, with linebacker David Helton and safety Jeremy Cash, respectively, being honored. In 2020, Victor Dimukeje represented Duke as a semifinalist for the prestigious award.
Named after former NFL Hall of Fame star Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy annually goes to the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year, a player who has had the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, all characteristics exhibited by Lott during his illustrious playing career.
Â
The annual winner is selected by a national voter panel, consisting of former winners, members of the media, coaches, and members of the Board of Directors of The IMPACT® Foundation.
The winner is announced at a gala black-tie event at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, California December 8, 2024.
