CHARLOTTE - With the 2024 collegiate fencing season in the books, a combined 25 Duke fencers garnered spots on the All-ACC Academic Men's and Women's Fencing Teams, as announced by the conference office Monday. Christina Ferrari was named Co-ACC Women's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Allen Marakov earned ACC Men's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year.Â
The Blue Devils honored on the men's side were Xavier Ghazaleh, Stephen Kim, Marakov, Justin Morrill, Noah Nager, Kozmo Rhyu, Dayaal Singh, David Tierney, Samir Travers and Xander Wilcox. The women's honorees were Monica Balakrishnan, Chloe Beittel, Ferrari, Victoria Gorman, Charlotte Koenig, Rachel Koo, Rachel Kowalsky, Vanessa Lin, Sarah Lurye, Kavya Menke, Natalie Olsen, Sophia Shen, Hava Stone, Elisha Tan and Kunling Tong.Â
Ferrari posted another standout performance as a senior this winter and finished the year with her third All-America honor. She became the first three-time All-America honoree in Duke women's foil history and just the third Duke women's fencer to win the honor at least three times.Â
She collected a silver medal during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and went 37-16 during the regular season. As a two-time co-captain, she helped guide the women's foil squad to a 27-6 regular-season ledger and helped defeat a host of ranked Division I opponents throughout the regular season. Ferrari closes out her Duke career as a three-time All-American, the two-time ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, ACC silver and bronze medalist to go along with a number of academic honors.Â
Marakov captured his first All-America honor of his career with a tied-for-third-place finish in men's epee at the NCAA Championship. His bronze finish was the best of a Duke men's epee player since 2014. He played to a 34-27 regular-season record and earned a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. He placed seventh during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and is named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the second time in his career as a junior.Â
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Graduate students must have an undergraduate and graduate career minimum GPA of 3.0 as well as a minimum 3.0 GPA during the most recent semester. In addition, student-athletes must compete in either the ACC Championship or NCAA Championship this season.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
