Carter Selected by Buffalo Bills in Third Round

DURHAM - Former Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.
Carter was the 95th overall pick in the draft, and the 32nd selection in the third round.
Carter, a 6-3, 305-pound Pickerington, Ohio, product is Duke's second 2024 NFL Draft selection as Graham Barton went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 26th overall pick. This marks the first time since 1967 that the Blue Devils had two players drafted in the opening three rounds and the 35th time overall the program has had two or more draft selections. Additionally, Carter is Duke's first defensive tackle selected since Chris Combs went in the sixth round to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2000. Carter is also the third Duke draft pick by the Buffalo Bills and the first since Ross Cockrell was a fourth-round choice in 2014.Â

As the first three-time team captain in program history, Carter earned two-time All-America honors and three-time All-ACC recognition during his Blue Devil tenure. He was a 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) Scholar-Athlete, the recipient of the ACC's Jim Tatum Award, and was a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. Additionally, Carter was honored with the program's Carmen Falcone Team Most Valuable Player Award and Defensive MVP nod in 2023 and selected to the AFCA Good Works Team in 2022.

In 52 career games with 39 starts, Carter compiled 127 tackles, 25.0 tackles for loss, 12.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 15 quarterback pressures, 11 pass breakups and one blocked kick. He started 38 consecutive contests at defensive tackle to close his career and finished his tenure registering one-plus tackle in 36 of his final 39 games played. Carter posted a career-high nine tackles against Georgia Tech in 2022 and garnered multiple tackles for loss in five games, including a career-high 2.0 against North Carolina (2021 & 2022), Boston College (2022), and Wake Forest (2022).

In 2,643 career snaps, Carter finished tied for fourth in program lore in caused fumbles and tied for 11th in sacks. He earned a career-best 2.0 sacks against Boston College in 2022 and notched a career-high two forced fumbles at Northwestern in 2021. Additionally, he returned two fumbles for a touchdown in contests with North Carolina A&T (2022) and Connecticut (2023).

During his final campaign in 2023, Carter tallied 41 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, four pass breakups, one fumble recovery and four quarterback pressures in 13 starts. He registered one-plus tackle in 12 games, including a year-best eight stops against Wake Forest.Â
