ELON, N.C. – Sixth-ranked Duke (17-1, 3-0 ACC) defeated Elon (5-14), 6-0, on Tuesday at Hunt Softball Park to collect its fifth-straight shutout victory.
The Blue Devils' offense was led by senior
Francesca Frelick, who batted 2-for-2 with two RBI. In addition, graduate student
Gisele Tapia finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, while accounting for two of Duke's six runs.
Sophomores
Cassidy Curd and
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon combined in the circle to shut out the Phoenix. Curd picked up the win after tossing 5.0 hitless innings with eight strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke's offense was quick to load the bases in the top of the first using a pair of singles and a walk.
- Tapia opened the scoring with an RBI-single to plate sophomore D'Auna Jennings, who led off with an infield single.
- Senior Kelly Torres drove in two more runs during the following at bat with a base hit to center field to push Duke ahead, 3-0.
- Frelick then sent a sacrifice fly into center field to score Tapia and stretch the lead to 4-0 after the opening frame.
- Continuing the momentum, Frelick plated another run with an RBI-double in the top of the third.
- Sophomore Aminah Vega rounded out Duke's sixth and final run in the top of the fifth, scoring from second on fielding error.
NOTES
- Curd's eight strikeouts on the night pushed her past the 200-career strikeout milestone and she now has 201 to her name in 151.1 career innings of work.
- The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native made her 25th career start and improved to 2-1 on the year.
- With the victory, Duke extended its winning streak and have currently won 17 consecutive heading into the weekend.
- Jennings is now riding a 12-game hitting streak after batting 1-for-4 during the contest.

The Blue Devils return home to host South Dakota State for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at Duke Softball Stadium. Friday's opener is set for 2 p.m.
