LA QUINTA, Calif. – The Duke men's golf team turned in the second-best team round of the day, a 10-under 274, during Tuesday's second round of The Prestige and sits in third place ahead of Wednesday's final round of action.
Luke Sample paced the Blue Devils, signing for a 4-under, 67, and
Ethan Evans carded a 3-under, 68, to remain near the top of the individual leaderboard for the tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED: DAY TWO
- Luke Sample started on hole No. 10 and immediately got into red numbers, rolling in a birdie. The junior then eagled the par-5 12th to quickly get to 3-under on the day. A third birdie in his first nine holes came on the par-4 14th. Sample made the turn at 1-under and played steady golf for the first four holes of the front-nine, before pouring in three birdies across his final six holes to cap off his 4-under, 67.
- Kelly Chinn holed five birdies while tallying only two bogeys in his second round to sign for a 3-under, 68, on Tuesday. The junior played the first half of his round at 1-under, including birdies on holes No. 12 and 15. Chinn moved back to even-par following a bogey on No. 2, but closed his round strong with birdies on holes No. 4, 6 and 8.
- Ethan Evans continued his momentum from the first round, signing for a second-round, 3-under, 68. The sophomore sits at 8-under through 36 holes and in a tie for second place, trailing by just one shot. After starting his round with four pars, Evans erupted for four consecutive birdies, making the turn at 4-under. An up-and-down closing nine featured three more birdies before Evans eventually signed for his 3-under, 68.
- Bryan Kim carded an even-par, 71, in his second round and is tied for 10th place at 5-under overall. The freshman played steady golf throughout his 18 holes of action on Tuesday, making two birdies to offset two bogeys. Kim rolled in a birdie on both of the par-5 holes on the back-nine and played his closing nine at 1-over, following a late bogey on No. 7.
- Daniel Choi rounded out the Duke lineup on Tuesday, signing for a 1-over, 72. The sophomore made four birdies in a six-hole stretch during his first nine holes of the day, eventually making the turn at 1-under. Two dropped shots in his closing stretch finished off the 1-over round.
- In the individual tournament portion of The Prestige, Ian Siebers was the low Blue Devil with his 1-under, 71, with his round highlighted by his stretch of four straight birdies on holes No. 5-8. Jimmy Zheng carded a 2-over, 74, William Love signed for a 3-over, 75, and Daniel Uranga finished at 4-over, 76, to round out Duke's individual tournament representation.
NOTES
- Duke's 10-under, 274, as a team was tied for the second-best round on the course on Tuesday, trailing only Texas Tech's 11-under, 273.
- The Blue Devils have now finished under-par as a team in nine consecutive rounds and in 10 of their last 11 rounds.
- The 10-under score-to-par matches Duke's best scoring effort to par so far this season, matching its 10-under, 278, in the first rounds of both the Highlands Invitational and Rod Myers Invitational.
- Ethan Evans has finished under-par in five consecutive rounds and has finished in the 60's in three of those.
- Luke Sample rolled in his team-leading fourth eagle of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday.
