Blue Devils Open Action at Moon Golf Invitational

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the spring season Saturday at the Moon Golf Invitational, which is being held at the 6,503-yard, Par-72 Suntree Country Club Classic Course in Melbourne, Fla.

Due to incoming inclement weather, all teams played their practice rounds in the morning and were able to get the first round in following. The Blue Devils shot a 7-over, 295, and are tied for 12th overall with 36 holes remaining.

Inclement weather has canceled all golf for Sunday, so the second and third rounds will be contested on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

How It Happened

Duke was paced by junior Rylie Heflin, who carded an even-par, 72, and is tied for 22nd overall, while senior Anne Chen is tied for 32nd with a 1-over, 73.
Heflin, who hails from Avondale, Pa., opened action on hole No. 15 and was able to get off to a hot start with birdies on No. 18 and No. 3 to get to 2-under-par.She hit her 54-degree wedge from 95 yards to 15 feet and drained the birdie on No. 18.Heflin then sank a 20-foot birdie on No. 3.After a bogey on No. 4, Heflin hit her 6-iron into the wind from 155 yards to 10 feet and drained the birdie.She closed the day playing her final nine holes at 2-over.
Chen, a native of Sugar Land, Texas, started her day on hole No. 13 and moved to 1-under as she hit her sand wedge from 92 yards on No. 17 to three feet for birdie.She was 1-under through her opening nine holes, before closing 2-over to finish her round.Chen added another birdie on No. 11 as she hit a half pitching wedge from 106 yards to five feet.
Graduate student Emma McMyler had a slow start with a pair of bogeys over her first three holes, but played her final 15 holes at even par.McMyler, a product of San Antonio, Texas, opened her afternoon on hole No. 12, and collected three birdies over holes 1-9 on the day.She hit 12 fairways and 13 greens, as McMyler finished with a 2-over, 74.
Freshman Katie Li started her day on hole No. 14 with a bogey, but was able to stick her approach on No. 18 from 54 yards to three feet for birdie to return to even par.Li, who is from Basking Ridge, N.J., would go on to play her final 10 holes at 4-over-par to finish with a 76.
After opening her round with three straight pars, senior Phoebe Brinker was limited to only one birdie on No. 3 and shot a 78.

Rylie Heflin hit nine fairways, 11 greens and rolled 30 putts.
Heflin registered her third straight round of even or under par dating back to the fall season.She owns 10 career rounds of even or under par over her Blue Devil career.
Maisie Filler of Florida leads the individual action with a 6-under, 66.A total of 21 golfers out of 90 shot under par in round one.
Auburn leads the field with a 6-under, 282, in round one, while LSU (283), Louisville (286), Ole Miss (287) and Virginia Tech (288) round out the top five.
Duke was limited to only 10 birdies on the day, which is a season low in the first round and matches a season low for a tournament in 2023-24.
