DURHAM – Senior attacker
Katie DeSimone was among the 50 players named to the initial Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Friday evening.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Duke has featured players on the Tewaaraton Award watch list in 22 of the last 23 years since its inception in 2001. Former Blue Devil Katie Chrest received the prestigious honor following the 2005 season.
DeSimone appears on the watch list for the third consecutive year.
This is the second award this week for the Bay Shore, N.Y., native as she was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week following her milestone performance at High Point over the weekend.
DeSimone was stellar offensively for the Blue Devils against High Point as she reeled in seven goals and four dimes for 11 points. Additionally, her 11 points are tied for first on Duke's individual single game record book. She also tallied a hat trick in the setback at No. 25 Navy, the 24th of her career.
DeSimone became just the 11th player in Duke history to reach 200 points for her career and the first to do so since Kyra Harney (2015-18). DeSimone now owns 143 goals and 58 assists for 201 career points to rank 11th in total points, ninth in goals and 14th in assists.
Her career points are tied for 20th among NCAA Division I Active Career Leaders. Duke's career points record is 287, held by Duke great Katie Chrest Erbe.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced in early May. The Tewaaraton Award recipients will be chosen after the conclusion of the collegiate lacrosse season.
Duke will open its home slate with No. 13 Johns Hopkins Saturday before welcoming Winthrop Sunday.
