DURHAM – While the Duke men's lacrosse team is off to a strong start, a pair of former Blue Devil stars will put their skills on show in the Premier Lacrosse League Championship Series starting Wednesday evening at The St. James in Springfield, Va.
The PLL Championship Series features the top four teams from the 2023 PLL season competing in Olympic Sixes – the game format set to bring lacrosse back to the Olympics for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games. The event runs from Feb. 14-19, with all games being broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.
Former first-team All-Americans
Nakeie Montgomery and
Michael Sowers will represent Duke in the six-day event. Montgomery will suit up for the California Redwoods, while Sowers will lead the Philadelphia Waterdogs attack unit.
Montgomery and the Redwoods get the action started Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m., on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Sowers and the Waterdogs follow at 7:30 p.m., on ESPN+.
In "Sixes," all runners carry short-sticks and move as midfielders, navigating the full length of the 70-by-36-meter field. There is no shot backup, a 30-second shot clock and quick restarts after goals where the goaltender initiates play instead of the traditional faceoff in field lacrosse.
"Our coaches and GMs have put together top-shelf rosters to compete in our 2024 Championship Series – their first time representing their newly-minted home markets," said Paul Rabil, co-founder and president of the Premier Lacrosse League. "As we look ahead to the Olympics in 2028, we're eager to showcase this future format where coaches and players will demonstrate new strategies, skill and pace,
in the high octane six-on-six format."
A two-time PLL All-Star, Sowers led the Waterdogs to the 2022 PLL title and finished last season with 30 points from 15 goals and 15 assists. He ranked 12th in the league in points and goals and seventh in assists. In his two-plus seasons of professional lacrosse, Sowers has 96 points in 27 games played.
Montgomery, a dual threat on offense and defense, has played in 21 games for the Redwoods and scored 18 points from nine goals, including a pair of two-pointers, and seven assists. He also has four caused turnovers.
