No. 4 Duke returns home to Cameron Indoor Stadium to host Incarnate Word (UIW) on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., on the ACC Network.
Roy Philpott and Debbie Antonelli will call the action on the ACC Network. David Shumate and John Roth team up for the broadcast on the Blue Devil Sports Network.
Tuesday will be the first meeting between the Blue Devils and UIW Cardinals.
The Blue Devils rank eighth in the country in field goal percentage defense (.366), 18th in scoring defense (61.4), 19th in scoring margin (+19.1) and 20th in 3-pointers per game (10.6).
KenPom ranks the Blue Devils No. 1 nationally in adjusted defense efficiency (89.4).
Maliq Brown was a game-changer in Duke's 76-65 come-from-behind road win at Lousiville on Sunday (Dec. 8) with six points, a season-high 11 rebounds and three steals.
Cooper Flagg tops Duke in points (153), rebounds (82), assists (34) and blocks (13).
Flagg collected a pair of 20-point double-doubles without a turnover in wins over No. 2 Auburn and Louisville to earn Lute Olson National Player of the Week and ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
About the Incarnate Word Cardinals
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), located in San Antonio, Texas, competes as NCAA Division I members of the Southland Conference.
The Cardinals are coming off a 65-53 conference win over East Texas A&M on Saturday, Dec. 7.
UIW ranks fourth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, making 42.6% from long distance.
UIW 6-3 point guard Jalin Anderson ranks 13th in the nation in assists per game (6.4) and 6-4 guard Davion Bailey is 14th in three-pointers per game (3.56).
UIW sophomore 6-7 guard/forward Jordan Pyke hails from Greensboro, N.C.
Last Time Out
Duke rallied from a 14-point deficit at Louisville, as the Blue Devils (7-2, 1-0 ACC) went on to defeat the Cardinals (5-4, 0-1 ACC), 76-65, on Sunday, Dec. 8.
Duke logged the program's largest comeback victory since the Blue Devils overcame a 16-point margin against Boston College on Jan. 6, 2021.
With the victory in Duke's conference opener, the Blue Devils have now started ACC play with a win in six of the last seven seasons and are now 53-19 in ACC lid-lifters.
Duke outscored Louisville 43-28 in the second half after trailing by as many as 14 in the first half.
In the final 12 minutes of play, Duke limited Louisville to just three made shots from the field and only 14 points.
The 14-point comeback marked the Blue Devils' largest recovery in a victory since bouncing back from a 16-point deficit against Boston College on Jan. 6, 2021.
Duke has won nine of the last 12 meetings with Louisville, including six straight, and leads the all-time series 16-9.
The Blue Devils won the rebounding battle (35-34) and has now finished with a positive margin on the boards in seven of the nine games this season.
Duke's defense limited Louisville to just 14 points in the paint. The Blue Devils entered the contest allowing just 23.5 points per game in the paint.
The Blue Devils turned 15 Louisville turnovers into 20 points, while allowing Louisville to only score eight points off Duke's seven turnovers (three after intermission).
The Cardinals were limited to just three fast-break points, marking the third straight game that a Duke opponent has scored three or fewer points in transition.
Cooper Flagg paced the team with 20 points and a season-best 12 rebounds, securing a second consecutive double-double after his 22/11 performance against No. 2 Auburn on Dec. 4.
Flagg also blocked one shot, swiped two steals and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.
Tyrese Proctor finished with 13 points, second-most on the team.
Maliq Brown posted six points and was a force on the glass, grabbing a season-high 11 caroms. The junior finished with a plus/minus of +24, also swiped three steals and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.
Kon Knueppel scored 12 points, highlighted by two key three-pointers in the second half.
Knueppel also recorded six assists, two shy of his career high of eight that was set against Kansas on Nov. 26. The freshman has recorded at least two assists in all but one game this season, and has dished at least three dimes in six of the last seven contests.
Sion James rounded out Duke's double-figure scorers with 11 points, spearheaded by a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. James also reeled in three boards and tallied one assist, one block and one steal.
Duke Among Nation's Top Defenses
Duke is once again one of the top defenses in the country.
KenPom ranks the Blue Devils No. 1 nationally in adjusted defense efficiency (89.2).
This season, Duke ranks eighth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.366) and 16th in the nation in scoring defense (61.4).
Last season, the 2023-24 Blue Devils ranked 28th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 66.3 points per game.
In 2022-23, Jon Scheyer's first season as head coach, Duke ranked 24th in three-point percentage defense (.305), 27th in field goal percentage defense (.406) and 30th in scoring defense (63.6).
Flagg Collecting Accolades
Duke freshman Cooper Flagg, the No. 1-ranked prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, secured a spot on the 2024-25 Associated Press preseason All-America Team.
The 6-9 guard/forward was also announced as the Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year and named to the Preseason All-ACC First Team, as chosen by a select media panel.
Flagg collected 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the season-opener against Maine to become the first freshman in Duke history to have at least 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in their debut.
Flagg was the first Duke player in the last 40 years to amass 50+ points, 25+ rebounds and 10+ assists in his first three career games, per ESPN.
Flagg was voted as the ACC Men's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25, becoming the first player to earn both honors in the same week since Feb. 3, 2020, when Duke's Vernon Carey, Jr., accomplished the same feat.
Flagg has posted four double-doubles this season, including three with 20 points or more and two of those against ranked opponents, collecting 26 points and 11 rebounds versus No. 19 Kentucky and 22 points and 11 caroms against No. 2 Auburn.
In Duke's four top-25 matchups, Flagg averaged 21.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.3 steals per game.
After registering a pair of 20-point double-doubles without committing a turnover against No. 2 Auburn and at Louisville, Flagg was declared the Lute Olson National Player of the Week and the ACC Rookie of the Week (Dec. 9).
Flagg currently leads Duke in points (153), rebounds (82), assists (34) and blocked shots (13), and is second in steals (15).
Strength of Schedule
During a six-game stretch (Nov. 12-Dec. 4) before conference action begins, Duke played four teams that were ranked in the Associated Press preseason top-25 poll (No. 1 Kansas, No. 10 Arizona, No. 11 Auburn and No. 23 Kentucky) and were at least a 4-seed in last season's NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Devils posted a 2-2 record in those ranked contests with a road win at No. 17 Arizona and a home victory over No. 2 Auburn.
Duke plays three true road games before Christmas for the first time since the 1990-91 season.
