No. 9 Duke and No. 2 Auburn Face Off in ACC/SEC Challenge
The Opening Tip
No. 9 Duke hosts No. 2 Auburn on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 9:15 p.m. for the ACC/SEC Challenge on ESPN.
Dan Shulman, Jay Bilas and Kris Budden will call the action on ESPN. David Shumate and John Roth team up for the broadcast on the Blue Devil Sports Network.
Duke has a 37-15 record in top-10 matchups at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Auburn is just the second non-conference opponent ranked among the top-2 in the nation to visit Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1965. The last to do so was top-ranked Michigan on Dec. 5, 1992 - a 79-68 Duke victory.
A clash between Duke's No. 1 defense against Auburn's No. 1 offense, according to KenPom's national adjusted defensive/offensive efficiency ratings.
The Blue Devils are 35-3 (.921) at Cameron Indoor Stadium under head coach Jon Scheyer.
The Blue Devils rank fourth in the country in field goal percentage defense (.352), ninth in scoring defense (58.6), 12th in 3-pointers per game (11.1) and 17th in scoring margin (+22.1).
Cooper Flagg tops Duke in points (111), rebounds (59), assists (29) and blocks (10).
Tyrese Proctor has made two 3-pointers or more in all seven regular-season games, as well as both exhibition contests, to lead Duke with 23 triples.
Proctor made a career-best five triples versus Kansas and is now shooting 46.9% from distance this season (23-of-49).
If Mason Gillis enters the lineup on Wednesday, it will be his 140th game played. He owns a 108-31 record during his games played at Duke and Purdue since 2020.
The Series
Wednesday will be the fifth all-time meeting between Duke and Auburn, with the Blue Devils leading the series, 4-0.
Duke and Auburn last met on Nov. 20, 2018, at the Maui Invitational, a 78-72 Blue Devils' victory.
In the lone meeting at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Blue Devils edged the Tigers, 72-21, on Dec. 30, 1981.
About the Auburn Tigers
The Tigers defeated No. 5 Iowa State, No. 12 North Carolina and Memphis to win the 2024 Maui Invitational.
Auburn also beat No. 4 Houston, 74-69, on Nov. 9, as the Tigers enter the Duke game with three wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
Auburn ranks fifth in the nation in field goal percentage (.525), seventh in blocked shots per game (6.0) and ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.93).
Johni Broome, a 6-10 senior forward/center, leads the nation with 12.9 rebounds per game, ranks third in blocks per game (3.14) and double-doubles (5), and 22nd in points per game (20.7).
Head coach Bruce Pearl (Boston College, 1982) is in his 30th season as a head coach (669-264) and his 11th season at Auburn (207-119).
Wednesday will be Auburn's first road game of the season.
Last Time Out
A strong defensive effort by No. 11 Duke helped secure a 70-48 victory over Seattle on Friday, Nov. 29.
The Blue Devils held the visitors without a field goal for more than 10 minutes to start the second half and received a balanced scoring effort on the offensive end, led by Tyrese Proctor's 13 points and Kon Knueppel's 11.
Cooper Flagg produced across the stat sheet, scoring nine points while adding a game-high seven assists and a team-high nine rebounds.
Duke outscored Seattle 22-8 in the paint, representing the first Blue Devils' opponent to net single digits in that category. The previous season-low was Wofford (Nov. 16) with 16 points in the paint.
Duke outrebounded the Redhawks, 44-37, and has now grabbed more boards than six of seven opponents for a 5-1 record in those contests.
The Blue Devils tallied assists on 78% of their field goals, with 18 helpers on 23 baskets.
After limiting the Redhawks to 48 points on Friday, Duke has now held its opponents to 62 points or less in all four home contests this season, an average of 50.1 points per game.
Seattle shot just 21.3% from the field against the Blue Devils, a season-low by a Duke opponent.
KenPom.com Measures Duke as Nation's Tallest Team
Duke is at the top of KenPom.com's list of tallest teams in the country with an average height of 79.6 inches, better than 6-7 per Blue Devil.
Duke is once again one of the top defenses in the country.
KenPom ranks the Blue Devils No. 1 nationally in adjusted defense efficiency (87.3).
This season, Duke ranks fourth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.352) and ninth in the nation in scoring defense (58.6).
Last season, the 2023-24 Blue Devils ranked 28th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 66.3 points per game.
In 2022-23, Jon Scheyer's first season as head coach, Duke ranked 24th in three-point percentage defense (.305), 27th in field goal percentage defense (.406) and 30th in scoring defense (63.6).
Duke Against Teams Ranked No. 1 or No. 2
Duke has had 79 meetings against teams ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation, winning 29 of those contests dating back to 1950.
The Blue Devils have won 13 of the last 24 clashes against top-2 opponents.

Flagg Collecting Accolades
Duke freshman Cooper Flagg, the No. 1-ranked prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, secured a spot on the 2024-25 Associated Press preseason All-America Team.
The 6-9 guard/forward was also announced as the Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year and named to the Preseason All-ACC First Team, as chosen by a select media panel.
Flagg collected 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the season-opener against Maine to become the first freshman in Duke history to have at least 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in their debut.
Flagg was the first Duke player in the last 40 years to amass 50+ points, 25+ rebounds and 10+ assists in his first three career games, per ESPN.
Flagg was voted as the ACC Men's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25, becoming the first player to earn both honors in the same week since Feb. 3, 2020, when Duke's Vernon Carey, Jr., accomplished the same feat.
Flagg currently leads Duke in points (111), rebounds (59), assists (29) and blocked shots (10).
Strength of Schedule
Duke is wrapping up a six-game stretch (Nov. 12-Dec. 4) against four teams that were/are ranked in the Associated Press top-25 poll (No. 19 Kentucky, No. 17 Arizona, No. 1 Kansas and No. 2 Auburn) and were at least a 4-seed in last season's NCAA Tournament.
The challenge continues when the Blue Devils begin conference play on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Louisville, as the Cardinals are currently receiving votes in the top-25 poll.
Duke plays three true road games before Christmas for the first time since the 1990-91 season.
