DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach Manny Diaz announced Tuesday that running back Anderson Castle has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the institution and join the Blue Devil gridiron program.
The 6-0, 220-pound Castle played in 54 games with three starts for Appalachian State in the past five seasons. The Mountaineers went a combined 39-24 and 25-15 in Sun Belt action during his time on campus. ASU played for the Sun Belt Championship in 2021 and 2023 and captured the 2023 Avocados from Mexico Cure Bowl title with a 13-9 triumph against Miami (Ohio). Castle also helped the Mountaineers to the 2020 Myrtle Beach Bowl crown with a 56-28 win versus North Texas.
This fall, Castle played in 10 games with 50 carries for 246 yards (4.92) and a touchdown. He added 13 receptions for 88 yards (6.77).
As a junior in 2023, Castle appeared in the final six games, including both postseason contests, after missing the first eight while recovering from preseason surgery for a foot injury. He finished with 53 carries for 283 yards (5.34) and two touchdowns to go along with five receptions for 35 yards (7.00). His best performance came in the Cure Bowl victory with a career-high 119 yards. Five straight Castle carries — including gains of 10, 25 and eight yards in the middle three — helped produce a pair of first downs to run out the clock on the final drive. He also set up a field goal against Miami in the bowl by rushing for 26 yards on a third-and-23 play in the first half.Â
During his sophomore season in 2022, Castle appeared in all 12 games. He rushed for 167 yards on 26 carries (6.42) with two touchdowns. He added one reception for an 18-yard touchdown. Castle tallied rushing touchdowns in consecutive games against Georgia State and Robert Morris.
In his redshirt freshman campaign of 2021, Castle appeared in all 14 games and booked 47 carries for 236 yards (5.02) and three touchdowns. His touchdowns came against Elon (eight yards), Georgia State (22 yards) and Western Kentucky (nine yards). He produced six carries for 54 yards (9.00) in a loss during the Boca Raton Bowl.Â
As a true freshman during the 2020 season, Castle appeared in all 12 games, playing the final 10 at running back after beginning the season as an outside linebacker. He finished the season with 17 carries for 104 yards (6.12).
Castle, a Boone, N.C., native, will have one season of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2025 campaign. During his career, he has totaled 193 carries for 1,036 yards (5.37) and eight touchdowns with an additional 19 receptions for 141 yards (7.42) and a score.Â
