DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach Manny Diaz announced Saturday that defensive back Caleb Weaver has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the institution and join the Blue Devil gridiron program.
Weaver played in 34 games for Sam Houston State over the past three years, guiding the Bearkats to their first bowl appearance, and victory, with Thursday's 31-26 win in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. SHSU finished the season 10-3 with a 6-2 Conference USA (CUSA) mark. Â

This fall, the 5-11, 190-pound Weaver started all 13 games and earned First Team All-CUSA honors. He booked a team-high 97 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, six pass breakups, one caused fumble and one fumble recovery. His 69 solo stops were most of any individual in CUSA. Weaver opened the year with 10 tackles versus Rice and had interceptions in consecutive games against Hawaii and New Mexico State. In the bowl tilt, he carded a squad-best 11 tackles.Â
Weaver, a Houston, Texas, native, will have one season of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2025 campaign. He led a Bearkat defense that paced CUSA in scoring defense (20.46) this fall and ranked second in total defense (321.54 yards/game).

After redshirting in 2021, Weaver played in all nine games of SHSU's 2022 season and started five. He booked 21 tackles, 3.5 tackles for lost yardage, 1.5 sacks, one pass breakup, one caused fumble, one fumble recovery and one safety. As a redshirt sophomore in 2023, he started all 12 games and carded 49 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery.Â

During his Bearkat career, he totaled 167Â tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, six interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two caused fumbles.Â
