DURHAM, N.C. – Statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released Wednesday by the NCAA indicated that 97 percent of freshmen student-athletes receiving scholarship aid, or recruited individuals participating in programs that do not offer athletic aid, graduated from Duke within six years.
The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen in 2014-17 and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left Duke in good academic standing.
Nationally, Duke is fifth among Power 5 institutions with its 97 percent GSR. Notre Dame tops the list at 99 percent while Boston College, Northwestern and Stanford are tied at 98. Among Division I programs overall, Duke tied for 22nd. Columbia, Harvard, Santa Clara and Yale join the Fighting Irish at the top of the list at 99 percent.
Among Power 5 schools, the top five in GSR included Notre Dame (99), Boston College (98), Northwestern (98), Stanford (98) and Duke (97).
A total of 18 Duke teams achieved a 100 percent GSR for the 2014-17 period: men's and women's cross country & track and field, men's and women's fencing, men's and women's golf, men's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, rowing, field hockey, softball, volleyball and wrestling.
Duke's remaining programs – baseball (96), women's lacrosse (96), women's basketball (92), football (94) – each achieved a GSR of 92 percent or better. Men's basketball sits at 67 percent.
In the ACC, Duke's overall mark ranked third in the conference behind Notre Dame (99) and Boston College (98). Clemson (96), Louisville (96), Virginia (96) and Wake Forest (96) each achieved above 95 percent while Georgia Tech (94), Miami (93), North Carolina (93), Syracuse (93), NC State (92), Pittsburgh (92), Virginia Tech (90) and Florida State (89) rounded out the conference.
