DURHAM, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the Duke women's soccer team received the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament on Monday with the unveiling of the 2024 bracket this afternoon. The Blue Devils earned a No. 1 seed for the fourth time in Blue Devil history and is set to host Howard on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m., inside Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils (14-1-2) received their 29th all-time bid to the NCAA Tournament and enters as a top-16 national seed for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
The winner of Friday's match advances to the second round to face the winner of the winner of the LSU (9-8-3) versus Texas Tech (14-4-2) contest. That match will be played Friday, Nov. 22.
"It is awesome," said Duke head coach
Robbie Church. "The players, coaches and staff have worked so hard since July to achieve this. This is your ultimate goal when you start the season – you want to be a No. 1 seed, to be the overall No. 1 seed. It gives you the opportunity to play at home the rest of the NCAA Tournament. We are really proud and happy of what we achieved, but we also want more. We are looking forward to playing Howard in the NCAA Tournament."
Other No. 1 seeds include Florida State, Southern California and Mississippi State. The ACC received a total of nine selections – Duke, North Carolina, Florida State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Stanford and California.
Duke earned the No. 1 seed after collecting a 14-2-1 overall and 9-0-1 ACC ledger. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 1 in the latest United Soccer Coaches top 25 national rankings and No. 1 in the NCAA RPI. Duke has collected six wins against ranked opponents, including four versus top 10 foes. The Blue Devils were previously No. 1 seeds in 2011, 2017 and 2021, while advancing to the NCAA College Cup in 1992, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
Howard (11-4-5) earned the NCAA invitation for the third time in program history, after defeating FDU, 2-1, on Sunday to win the program's first Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament title. The Bison have been led on the season by NEC Coach of the Year Brent Leiba, NEC Defensive Player of the Year Rachel Suttle, NEC Midfielder of the Year Samantha James, NEC Goalkeeper of the Year Trinity Knox and NEC Rookie of the Year Gabriella Garcia-Terrell.
Duke and Howard will meet for the first time in program history.
In NCAA Tournament matches being played in Durham, N.C., the Blue Devils boast a 28-3-1 record.
First round matches will be played Nov. 15-17, while the second and third rounds will take place Nov. 22 and 24, respectively, and the quarterfinals on Nov. 29 or 30. The NCAA College Cup will be played Dec. 6 & 9 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
Tickets for Friday's NCAA first round contest will be $8 for adults, $5 for students with ID and two and under are free. Duke students can claim their complimentary ticket as they normally do for home events played at Duke.
