DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (16-25, 21-25, 23-25) to North Carolina Wednesday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium to suffer its first loss in conference play.
The Tar Heels used a .333 hitting percentage to improve them to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in ACC action. The Blue Devils dip to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Duke was led by
Kerry Keefe with 13 kills and just one error for a .414 hitting percentage. Setter
Grace Penn dished 27 assists, while libero
Mailinh Godschall grabbed 11 digs.
Rylie Kadel led the blocking contingent with four total blocks as Duke out-blocked its opponent, 10-8.
How it Happened
- North Carolina opened the match with a 6-0 scoring run, and did not let up with zero ties or lead changes. The Tar Heels hit .556 percent to take the early lead.
- Keefe led Duke's offense in the second set with five kills and no errors, while Kadel registered three blocks in an attempt to slow down UNC's high-powered offense. Despite their lowest hitting percentage for the match, the Tar Heels stayed strong to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
- Trailing 2-0, Duke opened up a three-point lead (10-7) in the third set, forcing North Carolina into an early timeout.
- The Blue Devils held a 16-11 lead, but their opponents used a 9-4 run to tie the match late, 20-20. Following a Duke timeout, North Carolina tallied consecutive kills to lead by two (22-20), making Duke use its final timeout of the set.
- North Carolina's Chelsea Thorpe and Jackie Taylor set up a big block on Duke's Rachel Richardson to bring up match point. North Carolina forced a Duke hitting error to complete the sweep.
