DURHAM – Former Duke men's lacrosse All-American goaltender
Joe Kirmser has been selected for induction into the Connecticut Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame the organization recently announced. The ceremony will take place Jan. 20 in Stratford, Conn.
Joining Kirmser as 2024 inductees are Bradley Heritage, Colleen (Olsen) Kelly, Steve Luciano, Caroline McGuire, Ted Murphy, Robing Sheppard and Lang Clarke.
A native of Wilton, Conn., Kirmser was a four-year starter between the pipes for the Blue Devils from 1994-97. He played in 58 career games and amassed a Duke and ACC-record 847 saves for a 14.6 saves per game average. His 847 career stops still ranks 10th in NCAA history, while his 14.6 saves per game is 21st all-time among NCAA Division I goalies. Kirmser still holds the Duke record for saves in a season (243) and owns three of the top four single-season totals overall in program history.
Kirmser burst onto the scene in his first season in goal in 1994, making 243 saves and posting a .596 save percentage while helping the Blue Devils to the NCAA quarterfinals. Duke defeated Maryland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, holding the Terrapins to just nine goals.
As a sophomore, Kirmser upped his save percentage to .660, making 214 saves in just 14 games played. Duke, climbing to as high as No. 2 in the polls during the season, captured the ACC Championship with commanding victories over Virginia (17-10) and North Carolina (14-6) in the ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils fell to Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing the year 12-4 overall. Kirmser earned All-America third team recognition for his efforts.
After a tough 6-6 season in 1996, Kirmser and the Blue Devils had a memorable 1997 season, advancing to the program's first NCAA semifinal. Kirmser, who played the season with a torn ACL, finished the year with 217 saves in 16 games and a .625 save percentage. The Blue Devils defeated Johns Hopkins, 12-11 in overtime, to advance to the semifinal for the first time in school history. Kirmser garnered All-ACC recognition as well as All-ACC honors in his final season.
