Duke enters the 2024 season as the consensus No. 2 squad after finishing 16-3 and finishing runner-up in the NCAA Championship a year ago.
The Blue Devils return the core of the 2023 team that finished the year 16-3 overall, won the ACC title and advanced to the NCAA Championship game. Duke welcomes back 79 percent of its total points and 80 percent of its goals from a year ago, including the starting attack unit of
Brennan O'Neill,
Dyson Williams and
Andrew McAdorey. The Blue Devils ranked fifth nationally in scoring offense (14.84 goals per game) last season with O'Neill coming in at No. 4 on the individual chart.
Aidan Danenza and
Charles Balsamo return after combining for 63 points on the first midfield line.
Defensively, Duke has two thirds of its close defense coming back, including first-team All-American and USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Kenny Brower. Longstick midfielders
Tyler Carpenter and
Will Frisoli are back for their final seasons as Blue Devils and
Jake Caputo,
Jack Gray and
Aidan Maguire will help to anchor the defensive midfield unit.
Headlining the faceoff unit will be
Jake Naso. The senior specialist is only 34 faceoff wins away from breaking the Duke record held by Brendan Fowler.
The Blue Devils also welcome a host of transfers, including Michigan's top scorer
Josh Zawada and Princeton midfielder
Alex Slusher and goaltender
Griffen Rakower.
William Helm is back for a final season between the pipes after coming in from St. Lawrence last season.
Denver welcomes back a wealth of talent as well, with a 56-man roster that includes seven graduate-year players and 11 true seniors. Every single scorer from the 2023 team returns as do the veteran anchors to last year's eighth-ranked defense. Jack DeBenedetto, a close defenseman, and longstick midfielder AJ Mercurio both received USA Lacrosse Magazine preseason All-America recognition. JJ Sillstrop will be looked to as the veteran leader on the attack unit.
