DURHAM – Duke head football coach
Manny Diaz announced Tuesday that
Harland Bower and
Zohn Burden will remain on staff as assistant coaches. Bower will continue to guide the defensive ends, while Burden will stay with the wide receivers.
Over the last two years, Bower and Burden helped the Blue Devils to a 17-9 overall record, a 9-7 ledger in ACC play and back-to-back postseason wins at the 2022 Military and 2023 76
® Birmingham Bowls.
Last season, Duke finished undefeated at home in ACC play for the first time since 1989 and set a program record with six home victories of the year. The Blue Devils also strung together four straight 20-plus point wins, including a 28-7 triumph over No. 9 Clemson. Three of the Blue Devils' five losses were by seven points or less, and four came against nationally-ranked opponents. Additionally, Duke held nine-of-12 opponents to under 25 points, including four to less than 10 points.
Bower helped guide Duke's 2023 defensive unit to a top-20 national ranking in red zone defense (10th, .744) and scoring defense (18th, 19.0). The Blue Devils' scoring defense marked their best finish since 1974 when the defense surrendered just 18.91 points per game.
Throughout his tenure, Bower has aided in the development of defensive end
Wesley Williams, who finished his redshirt freshman campaign in 2023 with 39 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss to lead the unit. In addition, redshirt senior defensive end
R.J. Oben tied for the team lead in sacks and finished fourth in tackles for loss with 5.0 and 6.0, respectively, on the year.
Burden has guided wide receivers
Jalon Calhoun and
Jordan Moore during his two years in Durham to All-ACC honors. The pair became the first Duke duo to both register 600-plus receiving yards in back-to-back seasons since
Conner Vernon and
Donovan Varner did so in three consecutive years from 2009-11. Calhoun posted 873 yards in 2022 and 666 yards in 2023, while Moore finished with 656 and 835 yards, respectively. Both players earned All-ACC honors with Calhoun garnering nods in 2022 and Moore in 2023.
Calhoun concluded his Duke career ranked tied for third in program history in pass receptions (253) and fourth in receiving yards (3,026). Moore, who converted from quarterback at the beginning of the 2022 season, has 122 receptions and 1,491 receiving yards in his career.
